Today’s reading: Romans 13:8

The debt we all should have

We read in Romans 13:8:

8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.

When we hear about debt, we almost always see it in a negative light. Understandably, we all don’t want to be in debt. We want to be financially free and be able to afford to live a comfortable life.

However, the Bible talks about a debt which is something that we all should have. That debt is the debt to love one another. This is our divine obligation not just to God but also to other people.

We can pay our financial debt and be free of our obligation. However, the godly debt that Paul wants us to have is something we can’t pay. You can’t simply pay it once. You have to pay it continually.

What this means is that we must continually love another. We must not think that if we have already loved a person once that’s enough and we are free not to love that person anymore.

What’s so great about this principle is that the more we pay our godly debt, the more we become rich. Because in doing so, we are laying treasures in heaven.

Paul continues to explain that when we love one another, we have fulfilled the law (verse 10). This is true because the 10 Commandments show us how to love God and our fellow. In short, the law of God is founded on love and demonstrates what love is.

As a result, when we pay our debt of loving one another, we do it according to God’s law. We don’t simply love others by our definition.

Love can be a hazy and complicated concept for many. That’s why we see the same word, “love”, meaning differently in different people.

We need to look to God and His commandments to know exactly how we should love one another. It is the Almighty who decides how we ought to truly love.

With that said, may we continually fulfill our obligation and pay our “debt” to love others each day of our lives.
