(I’ve prepared a special summary video found at the bottom of this article. Don’t miss it!)

The 30 Best Lessons You Need to Learn from Adam and Eve
What are the lessons we can learn from the life of Adam and Eve?

Lesson no. 1: God created us for a greater purpose

Of all the creation of God, it is the human beings that hold the incredible potential to be part of God’s divine family. This great privilege is not given to animals and not even to the angels.

We are created for a greater purpose. God was reproducing Himself through Adam and Eve. God wants to expand His family and He wants to include you. We read in Hebrews 2:10:

“For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

We are not simply to exist, live, and die. We have been given the phenomenal opportunity to become spiritual beings and reign with Jesus Christ in God’s future kingdom. For this reason, we must use this life to prepare for that awesome future.

Lesson. 2: God intimately created us

Isn’t it amazing that when it comes to the creation of human beings, God didn’t simply say “let there be human beings?” Psalms 139:14 even tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made!

Genesis 2:7 provides us with the details about how God created us:

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

We read in this verse that God has “formed” us. If you looked into the Hebrew word of that word, it literally means to squeeze into shape as a potter formed his pots!

God formed us with His own hands. He intricately, personally, and skillfully formed every part of our body. Not only that, but notice the latter part of verse 7, “Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.” This shows us how close God was to us when He gave us the very essence of life.

Lesson no. 3: We are the caretaker of the earth

The Bible clearly shows us that we are His special creation. For this reason, He gave human beings a special job to take care of His creation. We read:

“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Genesis 1:26).

Genesis 2:15 added:

“Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”

These verses show us that right in the beginning, God has given the responsibility for man to take care of His creation and not to abuse it.

Lesson no. 4: There’s no immortal soul

Most people thought that the soul is immortal and it cannot die. However, a careful reading of Genesis tells us otherwise.

When God created Adam, we read that he “became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). The Hebrew word for soul is nephesh – the same Hebrew word used to refer to animals and other creatures (Genesis 1:21). Obviously, animals don’t have a soul.

Ezekiel 18:4 and 20 tell us that a soul can and will die. This is supported by Matthew 10:28. (Be sure to read, “Five Shocking Bible Verses that Prove the Immortal Soul Teaching is False.”)

Lesson no. 5: It’s not good to be alone

God has given us the inner desire for companionship. As they say, “no man is an island” and God certainly agrees when He said, “It is not good for that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18).

King Solomon, the wisest King of His time, even agreed when He wrote in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:

Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Lesson no. 6: Eve isn’t just a “helper”

Many people mistakenly believe that God favors men than women. They use Genesis 2:18 to point out that Eve was a mere “helper” to Adam. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

The Hebrew word of helper here is the same word used to describe God as our helper with a slight variation. It shows us that Eve is a helper to Adam in a sense that man isn’t complete with a woman.

Lesson no. 7: God chose the rib to create Eve for a good reason

Genesis 2:21 tells us that God took a rib of Adam and transformed it into a woman. It is interesting to note that of all the bones of the Adam, why would God choose the rib?

The rib bone is said to have a special ability to regenerate itself. So, God perfectly knew that even if He took Adam’s rib, it will grow back.

However, there’s a better reason why God chose the rib of Adam as it signifies a great meaning for all of us to learn. I believe this is best explained by the words of Matthew Henry:

“That the woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.”

Such a beautiful and inspiring description of God’s wisdom when He created man and woman!

Lesson no. 8: God is the best surgeon and physician

The first surgical procedure was long have been recorded in the pages of your Bible. We read Genesis 2:21:

“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.”

God, the author of our life and the master designer of our biological makeup, perfectly knew how to perform the surgical removal of Adam’s rib.

This shows us that God has the perfect and complete knowledge of how our bodies function, from the smallest cell to the biggest organ. Thus, it is not difficult to see why we must go to God for healing every time we are sick.

We can always consult His Word to discover how we can better take care of ourselves and stay healthy. (Please make sure to read “Five Incredible Reasons God is the Greatest Physician.”)

Lesson no. 9: God did not lie

God said, “Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

However, Adam and Eve didn’t die after eating the forbidden fruit.

Did God lie? Of course not. The truth is that a day for God is equivalent to a thousand years. We read:

“But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (II Peter 3:8).

Adam and Eve did not leave more than a thousand years. So, God did not lie.

Lesson 10: God doesn’t force us to follow Him

God tells us what is good and bad for us. As much as He wants us to follow Him, He won’t force us to do His commandments. From the start, God has given us free will – meaning, we are free to make our own choices.

Sadly, Adam and Eve made the wrong choice.

God wants children in His Family who follow Him from the heart. He doesn’t need robots who would do anything He commands. That would be completely against His plan.

Of course, while we can choose what we want to do our lives, we can’t choose the consequence of our action. God’s perpetual law of reaping and sowing will surely take effect in every decision you make.

Lesson no. 11: Marriage is meant to last a lifetime

Marriage is sacred. God instituted marriage and it was meant to last for life. It should not end in divorce or separation. However, Christ showed us in Matthew 19:7-8 the reason why a lot of marriages now fail:

They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

When Adam and Eve married, we read in Genesis 2:24:

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Christ further teaches us:

“So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:6).

Lesson no. 12: Satan is the father of lies

Satan is the great serpent of old who lies, deceives, and destroys. (Unsplash)

Satan spared no time to deceive and tempt Adam and Eve. Right from the start, he eagerly waited for the perfect time to approach Eve and speak the very first lie spoken to mankind. He said in Genesis 3:1:

“Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Obviously, this is false. God never said that they can’t eat of any tree in the garden. This should not be a surprise because Satan is the father of lies.

Referring to Satan, Jesus said:

“When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

Lesson no. 13: We must be familiar of Satan’s tactics

One of the best ways to defeat Satan is to understand how he works. If we know his evil devices, then we are better equipped for knowing how to overcome them.

When Satan tempted Adam and Eve, the first thing he did was to twist the truth. From there, he planted a seed of doubt in the mind of Eve. He presented sin as if something that should be desired. He capitalized in man’s vanity. He made God a liar and persuade Adam and Eve that they can do better without Him.

Such tactics are still commonly used by Satan today. We see how he perverts the truth to deceive a lot of people. He destroys faith of the people by casting doubts and make evil good and good evil. He wants to make God look bad and him look good.

Lesson no. 14: Adam has a greater accountability

I Timothy 2:14 reveals more details about what happened in the Garden of Eden:

“And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”

Adam, as the head of the family, should have made a stand against the devil. In fact, he perfectly knew that by eating the forbidden fruit, they were committing rebellion against God, thereby sinning as well. While Eve was deceived, Adam wasn’t. He was in the better position to stop himself and Eve from sinning, but he DIDN’T.

The Bible reveals that those who know what is right and still didn’t do it is subject to a greater condemnation compared to those who don’t know any better.

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:227).

Lesson no. 15: Sin separates us from God

Adam and Eve were placed in a perfectly good environment. They enjoy a close relationship with God, the Father and Creator. However, the moment they committed sin, what happened? A rift between God and man were produced.

Isaiah 59:2 explained:

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened,
That it cannot save;
Nor His ear heavy,
That it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.

Lesson no. 16: Run toward God not away from Him

While it is true that sin can indeed separate us from God, we can go back to him through repentance and changing our lives for the better.

Adam and Eve, instead of confessing their sins and asking for God’s forgiveness, they chose to hide from God. Instead of running toward God, they run away from Him.

We must learn a lesson from this story. Remember that no sin that is too big that God can’t forgive. As long as we repent of them and do our best in becoming a better follower of Christ, then God will graciously and mercifully forgive us.

Lesson 17: We must stop playing the blame game

When God asked Adam what happened, Adam was quick to point the fault to Eve. When it was time to ask Eve, she blames the serpent. (To learn more, please read, “Are You Playing the Blame Game?”)

Playing the blame game does not lead to maturity. Accepting responsibility and facing the consequences of your actions, be it good or bad, is the only way to go.

Adam should have been man enough to be accountable for his actions. He should have accepted the responsibility and simply endure the consequences of his actions. Instead of making excuses and blaming others, he should have said sorry and decide to change for the better right there and then.

Lesson no. 18: Covetousness starts with the mind

The Tenth Commandment, “Thou shalt not covet” is something that is very unique among the Ten. Covetousness starts with the mind. It is something that is actually not yet being done. It is just in your mind waiting to be fulfilled by your actions. And yet, the Bible tells us that even the very thought of coveting is a sin!

What was one of the reasons that Eve took the forbidden fruit and eat? We read in Genesis 3:6:

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.”

Because of the appealing appearance of the fruit and its promise of supposed wisdom, Eve became covetous. From there, she entertained the covetous thought to the point that it gave birth to bigger sins.

That’s how dangerous covetousness is. Sin should be stopped right before we think about it.

Lesson no. 19: We will reap what we sow

Adam and Eve sow the sin of rebellion and disobedience. For this reason, they have reaped its many deadly fruits.

The Apostle Paul made it clear:

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life (Galatians 6:7-8).”

Lesson no. 20: You can’t hide from God

You can't hide from God

It is impossible to hide from God and yet, many of us still try to. Adam and Eve, after committing their sin, they tried to hide from God. However, they should have known better.

King David very well knew that He can’t hide from God. He wrote:

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in [c]hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me (Psalm 137:7-10).

Lesson no. 21: God will still take care of you

Adam and Eve have disobeyed God. They committed sin and rebellion. God has every right to forsake Adam and Eve. He has every reason to justify His action to simply let go of these frail human beings. However, we could see that even after Adam and Eve sinned, God still took care of them.

We read in Genesis 3:21 that God made Adam and Eve tunics. Even after driving them out of the Garden of Eden, God remained involved in their lives and the lives of their children.

Lesson no. 22: We are made alive in Christ

It is worth noting that Christ was referred to as the second Adam. The first Adam, during his spiritual battle against Satan, failed and fell to disobedience. However, Christ, as the second Adam, gloriously triumphed over Satan.

Yahshua or Jesus Christ didn’t fail but instead, He proved to be worthy to dispossess Satan of His rule in this world and one day, Christ will return as a conquering King! (I’ve written an article related to this. Please read, “12 Important Lessons We Learn from the Temptation of Jesus Christ.”)

We read in I Corinthians 15:20-22, 45:

But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive… And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

Lesson no. 23: What God takes away, He restores more

When God takes away something from you, how do you feel? Do you feel cheated? Do you feel depressed, disappointed, or maybe, angry?

We can learn something from the life of Adam here. God took one of Adam’s ribs. At first, it seems painful. In fact, in the eyes of man, it seems Adam was cheated. God took something away from him!

However, when the right time comes, after a deep sleep, Adam woke up with a bride. What God takes away, He has restored more than what Adam could have hoped for!

God took Adam’s rib, but He restored it with His wife.

In the same way, when God asks us to put down something, it is because He wants to give us something way better than any of our plans.

Lesson no. 24: Let God choose a spouse for you

Aside from baptism, getting married is the most important decision you will ever make in your life. This is a major and serious decision that you should never base on your will but God’s will.

In the beginning, it was God who chose a spouse for Adam and we can learn something crucial from this story.

As followers of Christ, we are instructed to never be unequally yoked with unbelievers. It means when choosing a spouse, let us not marry those who are outside of our faith. This can potentially be deadly in the long run.

Do you really want a spouse who doesn’t understand God’s plan of salvation? Do you want a spouse who can’t even teach your children godly principles? Do you want a spouse who won’t support your decision when it comes to doing God’s work and His commandments?

For this reason, if you want God’s guidance, let Him lead you in finding a spouse. Like Adam who was given Eve, you can also ask God. If it is His will, you will find the right husband or wife.

Lesson 25: Sin brings temporary pleasures but permanent penalties

Adam and Eve made a decision that has changed not just their lives, but the rest of mankind. The sin they committed opened a floodgate of other sins and ultimately death in this world.

Yes, sin might have given Adam and Eve pleasures, but it never lasted for long. Soon they have to face the consequences of their actions.

This should teach us a lesson as well. The sins we commit does not just affect us, but also other people. Not only that, but our sin can even affect those people who are yet to be born!

So before you sin, think about the consequences of your actions.

Lesson no. 26: A man shall leave his father and mother

Why did God have to mention that a man should leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife? Is this something only applicable to Adam?

Of course, not.

There’s a timeless wisdom that comes with this instruction. A man who decides to marry should have the capacity and willingness to go outside the jurisdiction of his parents.

In a family, there should only one head and what will happen if a man stays in the house of his parents together with his wife? There will be two heads and the wife should submit to both. This setting isn’t ideal. The husband can’t be both a dependent child and independent husband at the same time!

We have heard a lot of problems that rose up just because a man can’t stand on his own to provide for his family and would need to look to his parents for support. It is not good for a wife to have two competing authorities within a house.

Thus, it should not be a surprise that God said in Genesis 2:24:

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Lesson no. 27: You can only choose one of the trees

As Christians or followers of Christ, we are given a choice. Like Adam and Eve, we are to choose between the Tree of Life or the Fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. While the choice should be obvious, we sometimes still make the wrong decision.

We are to make the right decision in life. God beseeches us to choose the Tree of Life. He tells us in Deuteronomy 30:19:

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.

God gives us a test and unlike our teachers in school, He has already given us the answer. He said, “Choose life!” We can’t choose both.

We can’t be Christians during Sabbath services and be like the world the rest of the week. You can’t just be Christians when you are with our church friends or when nobody is looking at you.

Being a Christian is our duty that we must perform 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! We can’t ask for a leave. We can’t tell God that we will only be a Christian when we already have a job or we are already old.

That’s not Christianity.

So now that you are given a choice, will you choose life or death? It a choice you have to make. Choose carefully and may you have the courage to make the right one!

Lesson no. 28: God is our Father

Isn’t it amazing that you can call the most powerful Being in the entire universe as your Father? God created us and we have been given the privilege to call Him our Father. No other religion that I know of allows their followers to call their gods as a father.

The Bible tells us that God is our Father and because of that, we can always depend on Him to provide all our needs.

Matthew 7:7-11 tells us:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

Please be sure to read, “7 Wonderful Ways God is a Father to Us.”

How a Father can Make a Positive Impact in their Children’s Life

Lesson no. 29: Satan is our enemy

Satan is deceitful. He does not have our best interest in mind. He knows that one day, he will be banished and he wants to bring as many humans as possible with him.

Make no mistake about it: Satan is our enemy. This is a common knowledge, but not all believe it or does not really know what it means. He is out there to destroy us.

The Apostle Peter tells us:

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (I Peter 5:8).

When Satan tempted Adam and Eve, he didn’t think of really helping them. He is not concerned about their welfare or how they can improve their lives. All he wanted was to destroy them!

So the next time Satan tempts you, remember He is your enemy. He is not a friend.

Part of defeating Satan is to know more about him. For this reason, be sure to read, “Top 20 Surprising Biblical Facts about Satan.”

Lesson no. 30: God’s commandments are for our benefit

Many people thought that God is out there to prevent us from having fun and from having a good life. People think that God’s commandments are burdensome and it is something that will curtail their freedom.

Nothing can be farther from the truth!

We read I John 5:2-3:

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Whenever God tells us to do something, it is for our own good. His commandments are there to guide us to the paths of righteousness. It shows us how to live this life and how to ultimately achieve a blessed and wonderful life.
