The Scary Truth About Christians Who Never Develop Godly Habits

Here’s a scary question:

What if your biggest spiritual problem isn’t that you don’t know enough about God, but that you haven’t developed the habits necessary to consistently follow Him?

You can listen to sermons every week.

You can read Christian books.

You can highlight your Bible.

You can save Bible verses on your phone.

You can even know exactly what Scripture says about prayer, forgiveness, obedience, faith, and holiness.

And yet, your spiritual life can remain stagnant.

Why?

Because knowing what to do and consistently doing it are two very different things.

Many Christians genuinely want to grow closer to God. They want to pray more. They want to read the Bible consistently. They want to overcome temptation. They want to become more patient, loving, disciplined, and obedient.

But wanting spiritual growth isn’t the same as building a lifestyle that produces spiritual growth.

And that’s where godly habits become so important.

📢 Want to move beyond simply knowing what the Bible says and start living it consistently? The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Christians will help you build practical, biblical habits that strengthen your faith, deepen your relationship with God, and transform your everyday life. Enroll today and start building the habits that can shape you into the Christian God is calling you to become.

The Scary Truth: You Become What You Repeatedly Do

Your spiritual life isn’t shaped only by the big decisions you make.

It’s also shaped by the small things you repeatedly do.

If you regularly spend time in God’s Word, you’re training yourself to listen to God.

If you regularly pray, you’re cultivating dependence upon Him.

If you regularly examine your life, you’re becoming more aware of areas that need repentance and growth.

If you regularly practice gratitude, you’re training your heart to recognize God’s goodness.

If you regularly obey God in small things, you’re developing a lifestyle of obedience.

But the opposite is also true.

If you continually neglect prayer, prayerlessness can become normal.

If you continually neglect Scripture, spiritual ignorance can become normal.

If you continually entertain unhealthy thoughts, those thoughts can gradually shape your character.

If you continually compromise in small areas, disobedience can become easier.

What you repeatedly practice eventually becomes part of who you are.

That’s why your habits matter more than you might think.

You Can Be Sincere and Still Remain Spiritually Stagnant

This is one of the uncomfortable truths we need to acknowledge.

You can genuinely love God and still have unhealthy spiritual habits.

You can sincerely desire to grow and still remain spiritually immature.

You can attend church faithfully and still struggle to develop a consistent personal relationship with God.

Why?

Because spiritual growth doesn’t happen simply because you want to grow.

It happens as you cooperate with God and consistently practice the things that strengthen your relationship with Him.

Paul told Timothy:

“Exercise yourself toward godliness.”
1 Timothy 4:7, NKJV

Notice that Paul used the language of exercise.

Exercise requires repetition.

It requires consistency.

It requires discipline.

Nobody becomes physically strong because they exercised once.

Likewise, nobody develops spiritual strength simply because they prayed once, read one chapter of the Bible, or listened to one powerful sermon.

Godly character is cultivated over time.

The Problem With Depending on Motivation

One reason Christians struggle with consistency is that they depend too much on motivation.

You feel inspired after hearing a powerful sermon.

You decide, “Starting tomorrow, I’m going to pray every morning.”

You read three chapters of the Bible.

You feel spiritually energized.

Then life gets busy.

You wake up late.

You become tired.

Something unexpected happens.

You miss your devotional time.

Then you miss another day.

Before long, the commitment you made disappears.

This is why habits are more powerful than temporary motivation.

Motivation says:

“I’ll do it when I feel like it.”

A habit says:

“This is simply what I do.”

That’s a major difference.

Imagine if you only brushed your teeth when you felt motivated.

You wouldn’t have a very healthy mouth.

The same principle applies spiritually.

There will be days when you don’t feel like praying.

There will be mornings when you’d rather stay in bed than open your Bible.

There will be seasons when you don’t feel spiritually inspired.

That’s precisely why you need godly habits.

Your habits can carry you when your emotions aren’t cooperating.

Your Spiritual Life Is Being Shaped Every Day

Whether you realize it or not, you’re developing habits every day.

The question isn’t:

“Do I have habits?”

The question is:

“Are my habits making me more like Christ or pulling me away from Him?”

Think about your ordinary day.

What do you do immediately after waking up?

What occupies your mind throughout the day?

What do you consume on your phone?

What do you do when you’re stressed?

Where do you turn when you’re discouraged?

How do you respond when someone hurts you?

What do you do when you’re tempted?

What happens when you have free time?

These seemingly ordinary moments are incredibly important.

Because your character is being formed in the ordinary moments of life.

Jesus said:

“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.”
Luke 16:10, NKJV

Godly living isn’t merely about what you do during a church service.

It’s about what you repeatedly do when nobody is watching.

You Don’t Need More Information. You Need Transformation.

We live in an age where Christian information is everywhere.

You can find thousands of sermons online.

You can download Bible apps.

You can listen to Christian podcasts while driving.

You can watch Bible studies on YouTube.

You can read theological books.

All of these things can be wonderful.

But there’s a danger.

We can become addicted to learning without actually changing.

We can consume Christian content for hours while barely practicing what we’ve learned.

We can know hundreds of Bible verses but struggle to forgive someone.

We can listen to teachings about prayer but rarely pray.

We can study faith but panic whenever difficulties arise.

We can learn about obedience while continually making excuses for disobedience.

Knowledge is important.

But knowledge was never supposed to be the destination.

God wants His truth to transform the way we live.

James put it bluntly:

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 1:22, NKJV

The goal isn’t merely to hear God’s Word.

The goal is to live it.

And godly habits help turn biblical knowledge into everyday practice.

Start Small

Perhaps you’re reading this and thinking:

“I’ve tried so many times. I start strong, but I always fall back into old patterns.”

Don’t become discouraged.

You don’t need to transform your entire life overnight.

Start small.

Choose one godly habit.

Make it simple.

Make it realistic.

Practice it consistently.

Then build from there.

Maybe start your morning with Scripture.

Maybe establish a regular prayer time.

Maybe spend five minutes each evening examining your day before God.

Maybe begin memorizing Scripture.

Maybe develop the habit of expressing gratitude.

Maybe intentionally practice forgiveness.

The goal isn’t to create a complicated spiritual routine that leaves you exhausted.

The goal is to establish simple, sustainable practices that continually point your heart toward God.

Over time, small habits can produce significant changes.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Daily Faithfulness

We often want dramatic spiritual experiences.

We want breakthroughs.

We want powerful encounters with God.

We want instant transformation.

But sometimes God works through something much less exciting:

daily faithfulness.

One prayer.

One chapter.

One act of obedience.

One temptation resisted.

One wrong attitude surrendered.

One person forgiven.

One Scripture remembered.

One decision to put God first.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

Eventually, those individual decisions become patterns.

Those patterns become habits.

Those habits shape your character.

And your character influences the direction of your life.

That’s why you shouldn’t underestimate the seemingly insignificant things you do every day.

Your ordinary habits are quietly building the person you are becoming.

So What Kind of Christian Are Your Habits Producing?

This is the question I want you to seriously consider.

Not:

“Do I believe in God?”

But:

“What kind of person is my current lifestyle producing?”

Are your habits making you more prayerful?

More disciplined?

More obedient?

More loving?

More patient?

More spiritually alert?

More familiar with God’s Word?

More dependent upon Him?

Or are your habits gradually making you distracted, prayerless, inconsistent, spiritually weak, and comfortable with things God is calling you to change?

You don’t have to remain stuck.

But you do need to recognize that spiritual growth requires intentionality.

You cannot build a strong spiritual life accidentally.

You have to cultivate it.

And that’s where godly habits come in.
