Don’t Call Yourself a Christian Until You Understand This

What if being a Christian is about far more than believing in God?

What if you can attend church, read your Bible, pray regularly, know Christian vocabulary, and even call yourself a follower of Christ, yet still misunderstand what it truly means to be a Christian?

That may sound uncomfortable, but it is a question worth asking.

Because Christianity was never meant to be merely a label.

It is a life.

Christianity Is More Than a Name

Many people identify themselves as Christians because they grew up in a Christian family, attend church, believe in God, or have prayed a prayer of repentance at some point in their lives.

But Scripture presents something much deeper.

Yeshua said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:15, NKJV

Notice the connection.

Love for Yeshua produces obedience.

This doesn’t mean we earn salvation by perfectly keeping God’s commandments. We are saved by God’s grace through faith. But genuine faith does not leave us unchanged.

If I claim to follow Christ but have no desire to follow Him, something is wrong.

The question isn’t simply, “Do you believe in Yeshua?”

The deeper question is:

“Are you actually following Him?”

A Christian Is a Follower

The word “Christian” can become so familiar that we forget what it represents.

To follow Christ means allowing Him to influence how you think, speak, behave, make decisions, treat people, handle money, respond to temptation, and live when nobody is watching.

It means saying:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

That is not always comfortable.

Following Christ means surrendering parts of our lives we would rather control ourselves.

It means forgiving when we want revenge.

It means telling the truth when lying would be easier.

It means resisting temptation when nobody would know.

It means choosing obedience when disobedience seems more convenient.

It means getting back up when we fail instead of using failure as an excuse to quit.

This is where Christianity becomes real.

You Were Never Called to Remain the Same

One of the biggest misconceptions about Christianity is that becoming a believer is the destination.

It isn’t.

It is the beginning.

God doesn’t simply want to forgive your past. He wants to transform your life.

Paul wrote:

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV

The Christian life involves transformation.

You should gradually become more patient.

More loving.

More disciplined.

More forgiving.

More humble.

More obedient.

More resistant to temptation.

More dependent upon God.

That doesn’t mean you will never fail.

You will.

Christians still struggle. Christians still make mistakes. Christians still have moments of weakness.

But there should be a direction to your life.

You may stumble, but you’re not comfortable staying on the ground.

You may fall into temptation, but you don’t want to make peace with sin.

You may fail God, but you want to return to Him.

That desire for transformation matters.

Don’t Confuse Imperfection With Defeat

Here’s something important:

Living a victorious Christian life does not mean you never struggle.

It means you don’t surrender to your struggles.

There is a difference between falling and deciding to stay down.

There is a difference between being tempted and deliberately embracing temptation.

There is a difference between struggling with sin and becoming comfortable with sin.

Victory isn’t the absence of battles.

Victory is learning how to fight those battles with God.

You don’t need to pretend that you’re perfect.

You need to become increasingly surrendered.

The Christian Life Requires Daily Choices

Jesus said:

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
Luke 9:23, NKJV

Notice that word:

Daily.

Following Christ isn’t something we do once a week.

It’s a daily decision.

Every morning gives you another opportunity to choose obedience.

Another opportunity to seek God.

Another opportunity to reject temptation.

Another opportunity to forgive.

Another opportunity to control your words.

Another opportunity to put God’s will above your own.

The Christian life isn’t built primarily through dramatic spiritual experiences.

It is often built through ordinary decisions repeated day after day.

So, Can You Call Yourself a Christian?

Don’t ask only:

“Have I accepted Christ?”

Ask:

“Am I following Christ?”

Don’t ask only:

“Do I believe the Bible?”

Ask:

“Am I allowing the Bible to change the way I live?”

Don’t ask only:

“Do I love God?”

Ask:

“Does my life demonstrate that love?”

These questions aren’t meant to make you doubt God’s grace.

They’re meant to make your faith real.

Christianity isn’t about wearing the right label.

It’s about belonging to Christ and allowing Him to transform your life.

And here’s the good news:

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
