Why Daniel Kept Praying When Everyone Else Stopped

There are moments when doing the right thing becomes difficult because everyone around you is doing something else.

Imagine being the only person in your workplace who refuses to compromise. Or the only student who refuses to cheat. Or the only Christian in your circle who still takes prayer seriously.

That is exactly where Daniel found himself.

Daniel 6 tells us that King Darius signed a decree stating that anyone who prayed to anyone other than the king for thirty days would be thrown into the lions’ den.

Daniel knew the law.

He knew the consequences.

And yet, Daniel kept praying.

Daniel Didn’t Wait Until Trouble Came

One of the most fascinating details in Daniel’s story is that prayer wasn’t something he suddenly discovered when his life was in danger.

Daniel already had a prayer habit.

Daniel 6:10 says:

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.”

Notice those final words: “as was his custom.”

Daniel didn’t begin praying because the lions were coming.

He was already praying before the crisis arrived.

That is an important lesson for us.

We often treat prayer like an emergency button. When everything goes wrong, we suddenly become desperate to talk to God.

But Daniel’s prayer life wasn’t built during the crisis. It was built before the crisis.

Daniel Didn’t Change His Prayer Life Because Of Pressure

The king’s decree was designed to intimidate people into silence.

Daniel could have thought, “I’ll just stop praying for thirty days. God will understand.”

He could have prayed secretly.

He could have changed his routine.

He could have told himself, “This isn’t worth risking my life over.”

But Daniel didn’t.

Why?

Because Daniel understood something many of us forget:

Prayer wasn’t merely something Daniel did. Prayer was part of his relationship with God.

Stopping prayer would have meant allowing circumstances to dictate his relationship with God.

And Daniel refused.

What About Us?

We may never face a law threatening to throw us into a lions’ den because we pray.

But we face our own pressures.

Busyness tells us we don’t have time.

Entertainment tells us there are more interesting things to do.

Fatigue tells us to pray tomorrow.

Distractions tell us to check our phones first.

And discouragement whispers, “What’s the point? God doesn’t seem to be answering anyway.”

Sometimes, everyone around us seems to have stopped seeking God.

And that’s precisely when Daniel’s example becomes so powerful.

Will we continue praying when prayer becomes inconvenient?

Will we pray when we don’t feel like it?

Will we pray when God seems silent?

Will we pray when our circumstances haven’t changed?

Will we pray when nobody else seems to care?

Daniel’s answer was clear.

He kept praying.

The Lions’ Den Didn’t Create Daniel’s Faith

This may be the most important lesson from Daniel’s story.

The lions’ den didn’t suddenly make Daniel faithful.

The lions’ den revealed the faithfulness that was already there.

His consistent prayer life had prepared him for the greatest test of his life.

And perhaps that’s one reason we should take prayer more seriously.

We don’t develop a deep relationship with God only because we are facing problems.

We develop that relationship before the problems come.

Prayer teaches us to listen to God, speak honestly with Him, seek His wisdom, and remain in His presence.

The goal isn’t simply to become better at saying prayers.

The goal is to learn how to live in God’s presence.
