How Christians Drift Away From God: 5 Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, “Why don’t I feel as close to God as I used to?”

Maybe you still believe in God. You still go to church. You still read the Bible from time to time. You still pray.

But something feels different.

The passion isn’t quite the same. Prayer feels more like a routine. The Bible doesn’t seem as interesting. And little by little, you find yourself becoming more comfortable living without thinking much about God.

The scary part is that drifting away from God usually doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens slowly.

That’s why it’s important to recognize the warning signs before spiritual distance becomes spiritual disconnection.

Here are five signs you shouldn’t ignore.

📢 Drawing closer to God doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intentional effort, and one of the best places to start is by learning and applying His Word. Let me guide you through my FREE online Bible study course, How to Live a Victorious Life, where we’ll explore practical biblical principles that can help you grow closer to God and live the life He wants for you.

1. You Stop Making Time for God

One of the clearest signs is when God consistently gets whatever time is left over.

You may tell yourself:

“I’ll pray later.”

“I’ll read the Bible tomorrow.”

“I’ve just been really busy lately.”

And sometimes, life genuinely is busy. God understands that.

But if weeks and months pass and spending time with God keeps getting pushed aside, something may be happening in your spiritual life.

Think about it.

We make time for the people and things that matter most to us. If God continually gets our leftovers, perhaps it’s time to honestly examine where our priorities are.

You don’t need to begin with an hour-long Bible study every morning.

Start small.

Spend a few quiet minutes talking to God. Read a passage. Think about what you’ve read. Thank Him.

What matters is rebuilding the habit of drawing near.

2. Sin Doesn’t Bother You Like It Used To

Another warning sign is becoming increasingly comfortable with things you once knew were wrong.

At first, you may have felt convicted.

Then you started making excuses.

Eventually, you stopped thinking about it.

That’s dangerous.

The problem isn’t that Christians will never struggle with sin. We all have weaknesses and temptations.

The danger comes when we stop caring.

When something that once troubled your conscience becomes something you casually accept, don’t simply shrug it off.

Stop and examine your heart.

Ask yourself:

“Have I become comfortable with something God is asking me to change?”

Honesty before God is better than pretending everything is fine.

3. You Become More Interested in What the World Says Than What God Says

Every day, we’re surrounded by opinions.

Social media tells us what to believe.

Friends tell us what is acceptable.

Culture tells us what success looks like.

Entertainment shapes our desires.

And if we’re not careful, the voices around us can become louder than God’s Word.

You may gradually start making decisions based primarily on what feels right, what everyone else is doing, or what will make you happy.

But following God sometimes means going against the crowd.

A Christian who wants to remain close to God must continually return to His Word.

Not because we’re trying to earn God’s love, but because we need His truth to keep us grounded.

4. You Stop Seeking God When Life Gets Difficult

Here’s another subtle warning sign.

Something goes wrong, and instead of running toward God, you run everywhere else.

You worry.

You complain.

You search the internet.

You ask everyone for advice.

You try to solve everything yourself.

And prayer becomes the last resort.

But difficulties can actually reveal the condition of our relationship with God.

When life becomes painful, where do you naturally turn?

God doesn’t promise that His people will never experience hardship. But He invites us to bring our burdens to Him.

Sometimes the very situation that makes you feel distant from God can become the opportunity to draw closer to Him again.

5. You No Longer Care About Growing Spiritually

Perhaps the most concerning sign is simply losing the desire to grow.

You stop asking questions.

You stop learning.

You stop examining your character.

You become satisfied with where you are spiritually.

You might think:

“I’m already a Christian. Isn’t that enough?”

Being a Christian isn’t simply about having a label. Following God involves an ongoing relationship with Him.

There should be a desire to know Him better, understand His Word, develop godly character, and become more like the person He wants you to be.

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen automatically.

It requires intention.

What If You’ve Already Drifted?

If you recognized yourself in some of these signs, don’t despair.

Don’t think, “I’ve gone too far. God won’t want me anymore.”

The fact that you’re concerned about your relationship with God can itself be a reason to stop and turn back.

You don’t need to wait until you feel spiritually strong before you seek God.

Start today.

Talk to Him honestly.

Open your Bible.

Confess what needs to be confessed.

Ask Him to help you change.

And take the next step.

You may not be able to change everything overnight, but you can choose to move toward God today.
