The #1 Mistake Christian Parents Make With Smartphones

Have you ever handed your child a smartphone without thinking twice?

Most parents have.

After all, smartphones help children stay connected, complete school assignments, and communicate with family and friends. They can be useful tools when used wisely.

But what if I told you that one parenting decision regarding smartphones could have a greater influence on your child’s spiritual life than you ever imagined?

Here is a sobering reality: the average child spends thousands of hours every year looking at a screen. Every video they watch, every social media post they scroll through, every influencer they follow, and every message they read is teaching them something.

The question is not whether your child is being discipled.

The question is: Who is discipling them?

Many Christian parents believe that the biggest mistake is allowing too much screen time.

I would argue that the biggest mistake happens even earlier.

The biggest mistake Christian parents make with smartphones is giving children access to them before teaching them how to use them with biblical wisdom.

Raising kids in our modern society brings unique challenges. Be equipped and learn Biblical principles. Download my FREE Bible Study guide, “How to Raise Children in the Digital Age.”

A Smartphone Is Not Just a Device

A smartphone is much more than a communication tool.

It is a doorway.

Through that doorway can come education, encouragement, creativity, and opportunities for growth.

But through that same doorway can come temptation, unhealthy comparisons, distorted values, false teachings, pornography, addictive entertainment, and voices that slowly pull a child’s heart away from God.

Technology itself is not the enemy.

The real danger comes when children are given unlimited access to powerful technology without the spiritual maturity and discernment to navigate it wisely.

Guarding the Heart Matters

The Bible tells us:

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23 NKJV)

If we are commanded to guard our own hearts, should we not also help our children guard theirs?

As parents, we lock our doors at night because we care about our family’s safety.

Shouldn’t we exercise the same caution when it comes to our children’s digital lives?

Smartphones Require Discipleship, Not Just Rules

This does not mean smartphones are evil.

Nor does it mean every child should never have one.

What it does mean is that parents cannot simply hand over a smartphone and hope for the best.

Children need guidance.

They need conversations.

They need biblical boundaries.

They need parents who are actively involved in their online lives and willing to discuss difficult topics before the internet introduces those topics first.

Most importantly, they need parents who intentionally point them to God’s truth every single day.

If You Don’t Disciple Your Child, Someone Else Will

The world is constantly trying to shape your child’s beliefs, values, and identity.

Social media influencers want their attention.

Entertainment companies want their loyalty.

Advertisers want their money.

The culture wants their worldview.

If Christian parents are not intentionally discipling their children, someone else will gladly step in and do it for them.

That is why raising godly children requires more than taking them to church once a week.

It requires intentional conversations, daily example, family worship, prayer, and a home where God’s Word has the loudest voice.

The Good News

The good news is that it is never too late to start.

No matter where your family is today, you can begin making changes that will shape your children for eternity.

You can create healthy digital boundaries.

You can have meaningful spiritual conversations.

You can build a home where faith is lived out daily.

And yes, you can raise children who do not merely know about God but genuinely love Him.
