Today’s reading: Song of Songs 8:4
Awakening love at the right time
We read in Song of Songs 8:4:
4 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
Do not stir up nor awaken love
Until it pleases.
This passage was repeated three times in the Song of Solomon (2:7; 3:5). When the Bible repeats something three times, it should catch our attention.
What does it mean to not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases? This is practical advice that we all should take into consideration.
One of the strongest emotions that we could ever experience as human beings is romantic attraction. As young people, being attracted to the opposite sex can have a powerful effect on us.
However, we must control our emotions and be sure we use this attraction for the right purpose and reason. If used right, our romantic emotions can lead to a fulfilling and blessed life. On the contrary, romantic attractions can be so destructive if we can’t control them properly.
That’s the reason we must not stir up nor awaken love before the right time comes. Being in a relationship and getting married is a major decision in our lives that shouldn’t be based on emotions alone.
A lot of young people today suffer dire consequences for awakening their love before the right time. Some get pregnant. Some didn’t finish their studies. Some were left alone with a child. Some don’t know how to raise their kids.
We must patiently wait for God’s timing. Before we get into any romantic relationship, we must prepare ourselves physically, emotionally, intellectually, financially, and most importantly, spiritually.
