Today’s reading: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Be watchful, steadfast, brave, and strong

We read in 1 Corinthians 16:13-14:

13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done with love.

The terms used by Paul are military in nature. If you go through each of them — Watch, stand fast, be brave, be strong — you’ll notice how we should act like soldiers for Yahshua.

We are all instructed to be alert and stay aware of our surroundings. We must be always on the lookout for the traps laid out by the devil. We must watch for world events and how it all leads to Biblical prophecies.

Standing fast in the faith means we should stand on our ground even if it means standing alone. When we are attacked by the devil, we don’t flinch. We don’t retreat. We don’t give into temptation. We stand in faith, knowing and believing that God will fight the battle for us.

We must be brave. Looking at the Greek word of brave here literally means to act up like a man! If you read this in the KJV, it says, “quit you like men.” In old English, quit could also mean “to conduct oneself in a specified way.”

Being brave means we act like real men. Real men protect. Real men respect. Real men provide. We should do our best to become men of God.

Be strong. Don’t be weak. Keep your body healthy and your mind sharp. Don’t get discouraged so easily. Instead, choose to be strong, so that you’ll also be a source of strength for others.

Now, all these things would be nothing if it is not coupled with love. Paul was saying, you should do all things with love. We can all be watchful, steady, brave, and strong, but without love, all those would be good for nothing.

Love should be the driving force behind every action. It should be the motivating factor why we become faithful, strong, and brave. It should be the reason why we do things.

After all, God is love and all those who decide to follow Him should also strive to love one another in the best that we can.
