Today’s reading: Psalms 115:1

Not unto us

We read in Psalms 115:1:

1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.

The phrase “Not unto us” was repeated here twice. It’s a way for the psalmist to express the seriousness and importance of his statement.

Indeed, not unto us, but to Yahweh’s name we give glory. When we do something good, it is not us who should be praised. All glory and honor always go back to the Father of lights, the giver of all good things.

As human beings, we love to receive praise. We love to receive honor. We love to get the approval of men. However, we must all realize that we are all nothing without God. He is the One who enables us to perform wonderful things. He is the One who gave us life. All the things that we see are God’s creation.

Thus, in the final analysis, we all have nothing to boast about. We are all made of dust. Our mortal body will soon fade away.

We must glorify God all of the time. Men may praise us, but we always direct the praise to God.

Because of God’s mercy, we glorify God. Because of His truth, we glorify God. If it weren’t because of God’s mercy, we would not be here. It wasn’t because of God’s truth, we wouldn’t find the way to eternal life.

May we go through life guided by this principle: Not unto us, O Yahweh, but to your name we give glory.”
