Today’s reading: Psalms 91:1

Dwelling in the secret place

We read in Psalms 91:1:

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91 is among the most popular chapters in the book of Psalms. It’s a psalm about God’s divine protection.

It’s quite interesting how this psalm immediately identified whom God will protect. It says those who dwell — those who choose to be in God’s secret place.

Notice the tense of this verb. It says, “How who dwells.” It is in the present tense. It means that we must continually choose to dwell in God’s presence.

Moreover, dwelling means to make the secret place as our home. We are not to simply visit God’s secret place. We are not to simply look at it. We must have the full intention to dwell — to say, to make God’s place our own habitation.

Once we do that, we are going to abide under the shadow of the Almighty, the Most High God. When we see God’s shadow, we know that He is near. Shadows serve as a guide that leads us to the source.

We must also understand that we are to dwell in a secret place. It’s a place that is hidden. It is not known to many people. Sometimes, God wants to see how much we want to be part of His dwelling place. Thus, He made this place a secret place. We must seek it with all our hearts and minds.

Once we find this secret place, God will allow us to dwell in it. The place isn’t an open court where anyone can go. It’s a special place reserved to those people who consciously made the decision to seek God and stay in His presence.

Throughout Psalm 91, we see different ways God will protect His people. We see the benefits of His goodness, mercy, and favor. Through God’s divine protection, we are preserved from various evils, dangers, and calamities.

All these started by first making the decisive decision to seek God’s secret place.

For you to enjoy God’s protection, you must also do your part. God is more than willing to protect those people who are willing to submit under His Authority.
