Lesson from King Ahaz

We read in 2 Kings 16:10-11:

Now King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus; and King Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the design of the altar and its pattern, according to all its workmanship. 11 Then Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus. So Urijah the priest made it before King Ahaz came back from Damascus.

We read how Israel made an alliance with Syria to attack Judah. As strong as their force was, it was not enough to conquer Jerusalem and defeat its king, Ahaz.

In Isaiah 7, God assured Ahaz that his enemy will not prevail. Yet, he didn’t believe what God said. Instead, he made an alliance with the king of Assyria. As part of his alliance, he visited the kingdom of Assyria where he saw the pagan altar in Damascus.

He was so impressed that he commanded Urijah to replicate this altar in the worship place of Jerusalem. As a result, we see how king Ahaz perverted further the worship of the true God.

Sadly, this is also what we see in today’s Christian religion. We see how many church leaders are so impressed with elements of pagan worship to the point that they incorporate them to true worship.

We don’t just see statues being worshiped, but also pagan celebrations all around. They changed the name but the celebration essentially stayed the same.

With the aim of attracting people to the church, leaders compromise and teach only things that people want to hear instead of what they need to hear. People want to hear about how God will bless them and not how they will be judged. They only want to hear the good part but not the essential part of God’s message.

Indeed, King Ahaz was among the worst kings of Judah, but thankfully, we don’t have to follow in his footsteps.

We can and we should establish true worship in our lives today.
