Why Worship God in Prayer?

Welcome back to our Bible Study Series on the 7 Qualities of Effective Prayers. In the first part, we talked about adding humility in prayer. Today, let’s delve into the second quality of effective prayers: Worshipful Prayer. Our prayers should commence and conclude with worship and praise to Yahweh, our heavenly Father.

Is God a narcissist?

Some may question, “Why should we worship God? Does it imply that He craves praise like a narcissist?” The truth is far from that misconception. God is inherently perfect and all-powerful. He is the Creator of all things and the source of life itself, making Him the supreme Being in the universe.

Unlike a narcissist who harbors a false sense of perfection and seeks validation from others, God’s greatness stands independent of human acknowledgment. Whether praised or not, God remains unchanged in His magnificence and perfection. Therefore, our worship of God isn’t to satisfy His ego but rather to acknowledge the reality of His greatness and sovereignty.

Why worship God in prayer?

So, why do we praise God? It’s not for His benefit, but for ours. Worship allows us to recognize the true nature of God and align our hearts with His greatness and majesty.

In Matthew 6:9, Jesus instructed us to begin our prayers with the mindset: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” To hallow God’s name is to treat it with reverence, respect, and honor, acknowledging His holiness and worthiness of worship. It’s an acknowledgment of His supreme power and authority over us.

We are created to worship

Therefore, our prayers shouldn’t solely revolve around ourselves but should also include worship and praise to God. As beings created to worship, it’s crucial to consider what or whom we worship. Ideally, our devotion should be directed towards the Creator rather than any of His creations.

What’s remarkable about worshiping God is that it naturally fosters gratitude. Thus, when we pray, expressing gratitude to God for His countless blessings is essential. This embodies a worshipful prayer—being thankful in God’s presence for His abundant grace and goodness.

Worshiping God Benefits Us

It’s important to understand that worshiping God isn’t for His benefit; rather, it enriches our own lives. It’s a practice that uplifts and transforms us, aligning our hearts with His divine will and bringing fulfillment to our souls.

When we worship God, it redirects our focus from idolizing the wrong things in life—ourselves, status, other people, wealth, and material possessions. Worshiping anything other than God ultimately leads to our downfall. It’s only through worshiping the true God that we can fulfill the purpose of our existence.

From this perspective, worshiping God isn’t about stroking His ego or elevating a sense of self-importance. Rather, it’s about nurturing a relationship grounded in love, reverence, and devotion. Worshiping God is an expression of humility and commitment, acknowledging His divine sovereignty and our reliance on Him for guidance, support, and salvation.

This highlights the second quality of effective prayers—worshipful prayer. It’s essential to incorporate worship into our prayers, recognizing that prayer isn’t solely about our needs but also about fostering a deeper connection with God.
