Who will God protect according to Psalm 91?

A lot of people love to read Psalm 91. However, did you know that Psalm 91 is not for everyone?

Yes, you read that right.

Not everyone who reads, recites, and memorizes Psalm 91 would be protected. Not everyone who knows this chapter would be delivered.

While it is true that God can protect whoever He wants to protect, Psalm 91 gives us an indication of who Yahweh will take care of.

So, if you want to enjoy God’s protection, you need to know these things.

The One Who Dwells

Those who constantly live a life close to God will receive special treatment. They can live in peace, serenity, and security because of God’s assurance that they will be protected.

Now, notice, the text says, “He who dwells.”

It didn’t say, “He who dwelt” or “He who will dwell.”

It is in the present tense.

God won’t protect those who stopped dwelling with Him or those who didn’t make the decision yet to be with Him.

It means that the one whom God will protect is someone who actively lives a godly life. The one who decided to be with Him and continues to be with Him.

The word “dwells” came from the Hebrew word yashab, which means to “sit down, settle, remain, and inhabit.”

As you can see, dwelling in God’s presence is a CONSCIOUS CHOICE. It is something that we decide to do, not out of necessity or grudge, but out of a willing heart.

Dwelling in the secret place of the Most High means that we constantly seek His love, comfort, and protection. God will protect those who want to know Him better and on a deeper level.

Compare that to those people who don’t live a godly life.

They expose their lives to many dangers and unnecessary pain and suffering.

People who live apart from God may prosper and earn wealth, but they will ultimately experience tragedy in a physical, emotional, and spiritual manner.

Making God Your Dwelling Place

In Psalm 91:9-10, we read an important key:

9 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.

Now, again, Psalm 91 is telling that we must make Yahweh, the Most High, our dwelling place.

It only means that we must dwell in His presence. We don’t dwell anywhere else.

It doesn’t mean that on Weekends you dwell temporarily dwell in God’s secret and then live in the devil’s house on weekdays.

That’s not how it works.

You need to make God your dwelling place 24 hours a day, seven days a week!

Setting your love to God

Here’s another important key to remember.

Aside from making God our dwelling place, we must also set our love on Him.

We read in verse 14:

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

What does it mean to set your love upon God?

It only means that your desire, emotion, and being is set upon Yahweh. Your eyes are fixed to God. 100% of your being is locked to God. You are completely dedicated to Him. You are passionate about learning more about Yahweh, getting closer to Him, and establishing an intimate relationship with Him.

Your love for God should be undivided.

You can’t have your eyes on God and on worldly lust and pleasures at the same time.

Enjoy God’s protection

These are the three things that the psalmist wants us to understand. Those who actively make God their dwelling place and set their love on Him will surely enjoy God’s divine protection.

  1. I use the King James Bible and I believe that the “Secret place of the most high” is refering to being in Jesus which was secret back in that time. It also reads in this psalm that the Lord is different from Father God since it writes and He made the Lord. We know that Jess is Lord and access to God the Father. So when we are in Jesus (have his spirit) we have abide in the shadow of the most high (God the Father). Non King James Bibles write the beginning of Psalms 91 different. I personally dwell in the secret place of the most high (Jesus Holy Spirit) and have access to the protection of this Psalm.
