Why Do So Many Christians Never Read the Whole Bible?

Imagine claiming that someone is the most important person in your life, yet never taking the time to read their letters.

Imagine carrying around a book you call the Word of God, defending it, quoting it, posting verses from it on social media, listening to sermons about it every week, and yet never actually reading the whole thing.

For many Christians, this is uncomfortable to admit.

We may know David defeated Goliath. We know Noah built an ark. We know Jesus died for our sins. We can quote John 3:16, Jeremiah 29:11, Philippians 4:13, and perhaps a few Psalms.

But there is a huge difference between knowing Bible stories and actually knowing the Bible.

And that raises an uncomfortable question:

Why do so many Christians claim to believe the Bible, yet never read it from beginning to end?

1. We Have Made Bible Reading Easier to Avoid

Today, Christians have access to more biblical resources than any generation before us.

We have Bible apps.

Audio Bibles.

Devotionals.

Podcasts.

Sermons.

YouTube videos.

Bible verse graphics.

Social media posts.

And yet, despite having the entire Bible available in our pockets, many believers still have never read it from Genesis to Revelation.

The problem is not always a lack of access.

Sometimes, it is the illusion of access.

Because we hear so much about the Bible, we can begin to feel as though we know the Bible.

Listening to a sermon is valuable. Reading a devotional can be encouraging. Watching a Bible teaching can help us understand Scripture.

But none of these should completely replace opening God’s Word and reading it for ourselves.

There is a difference between eating a meal and watching someone else eat.

In the same way, there is a difference between hearing what someone says about Scripture and personally immersing yourself in Scripture.

2. We Prefer Our Favorite Verses

Let’s be honest.

Some parts of the Bible are easier to read than others.

We enjoy the promises.

We love the Psalms.

We are encouraged by the Gospels.

We find comfort in verses about God’s love, grace, protection, and blessings.

But what about Leviticus?

What about the genealogies?

What about the difficult prophecies?

What about passages that challenge our traditions, expose our sins, or force us to rethink something we have always believed?

This is where many people stop.

We naturally gravitate toward the parts of Scripture that comfort us and avoid the parts that confuse us.

But if we only read the parts of the Bible we enjoy, we are allowing ourselves to decide which parts of God’s Word deserve our attention.

The Bible was not given to us as a collection of inspirational quotes where we simply pick the verses we like best.

It is a unified story.

From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture reveals God’s purpose, His character, humanity’s problem, His plan of redemption, and ultimately His Kingdom.

When we constantly jump from one favorite verse to another, we can miss the bigger picture.

3. Many Christians Think the Bible Is Too Difficult

Perhaps this is one of the biggest reasons.

People open the Bible with good intentions.

They start in Genesis.

They enjoy the stories of creation, Abraham, Joseph, and Moses.

Then they reach Leviticus.

Suddenly, there are sacrifices, laws, rituals, measurements, priestly instructions, and unfamiliar names.

The reading slows down.

Confusion begins.

Eventually, the Bible gets closed.

And perhaps it stays closed for weeks, months, or even years.

But here is something important to remember:

Not understanding everything does not mean you should stop reading.

You do not need to understand every verse perfectly before moving forward.

The Bible is a lifelong journey of learning.

Sometimes you will understand a passage immediately. Other times, you may need to study it, compare Scriptures, examine the context, or return to it later with greater understanding.

But imagine quitting a journey simply because you encountered a difficult road.

The difficult parts are not a reason to abandon the journey.

They are often an invitation to go deeper.

4. We Have Been Taught to Depend Too Much on Others

There is nothing wrong with learning from pastors, teachers, authors, and Bible scholars.

God can use faithful teachers to help us grow.

But there is a danger when we allow other people to do all our Bible reading and Bible thinking for us.

A sermon can tell you what a passage says.

But have you read the passage yourself?

A preacher can explain a doctrine.

But have you examined the Scriptures?

A devotional can give you an inspiring thought.

But have you personally spent time in God’s Word?

The believers in Berea were commended because they did not simply accept what they heard. They searched the Scriptures to see whether what they were being taught was true.

That is a powerful example for every Christian.

Your pastor can guide you.

Your favorite Bible teacher can help you.

But no one can build your relationship with God’s Word for you.

There comes a point when you must personally open the Bible and ask:

“What does God actually say?”

5. We Underestimate What We Are Missing

Here is one of the greatest problems with never reading the entire Bible:

You may not even realize what you don’t know.

You cannot miss what you have never discovered.

When you read only selected verses, you may never see how one part of Scripture connects with another.

You may miss how events in the Old Testament help explain the New Testament.

You may fail to see why certain prophecies matter.

You may not understand the significance of biblical symbols.

You may read a verse without realizing that its meaning becomes much clearer when you understand the chapters surrounding it.

The Bible is filled with connections.

Themes introduced in Genesis appear again throughout Scripture. Promises, covenants, symbols, people, events, and prophecies build upon one another.

That is why reading the Bible from cover to cover can be so powerful.

You begin to see the story unfold.

You stop seeing Scripture as thousands of disconnected verses and begin seeing the incredible unity of God’s Word.

6. Reading the Whole Bible Requires Commitment

Let’s face it.

Reading the entire Bible is not something that happens accidentally.

You need intention.

You need consistency.

You need a plan.

Without a plan, it is easy to keep returning to the same familiar passages.

There is nothing wrong with reading your favorite chapters again. But if you always return to the same places, there may be entire books of the Bible that remain virtually unexplored.

And years can pass before you realize it.

You may have been a Christian for ten years.

Twenty years.

Even longer.

And still have never read the entire message God has preserved in Scripture.

That is not meant to condemn anyone.

It is meant to challenge us.

Because today is always a good day to begin.

The Bible Was Never Meant to Remain Unopened

Think about how much time we spend reading other things.

News articles.

Social media posts.

Emails.

Messages.

Books.

Comments.

We scroll for hours without even realizing it.

Yet many of us struggle to consistently give time to the book we claim is the inspired Word of God.

Perhaps the issue is not that we do not have enough time.

Perhaps we need to honestly examine what receives our time.

Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, NKJV).

If physical food is necessary for the body, how much more should we value spiritual nourishment?

The Bible is not merely a book to decorate your shelf.

It is not just a collection of verses to use when you need encouragement.

It is not something we should only open when we have a problem.

God’s Word deserves more than occasional attention.

It deserves to be read, studied, understood, and applied.

So, Have You Ever Read the Whole Bible?

Not just your favorite books.

Not just the Psalms.

Not just the Gospels.

Not just verses recommended by a devotional.

Have you ever taken the journey from Genesis to Revelation?

If the answer is no, you are not alone.

But perhaps it is time to start.

And perhaps the reason you have not finished before is not because you lack the desire to know God.

Maybe you simply lacked a clear path.

You may have started before but stopped when things became difficult.

You may have become overwhelmed by unfamiliar passages.

You may have wondered what certain verses meant.

You may have wished someone could simply walk alongside you and help you understand what you were reading.
