Why Silver Medalists Are Sad (And How to Deal With It)

According to studies, bronze medalists are generally happier than silver medalists. Knowing that second place is better than third place, it doesn’t seem to make sense. However, in this blog, let me share with you how silver medals can be a curse and what you should do about it!

Why Silver Medalists Are Sad

Have you ever noticed how a bronze medalist, who finishes third, is often happier than a silver medalist, who finishes second?

This is a fascinating phenomenon. After all, you would think that second place is better than third, right? But in reality, that’s not always how it works.

Researchers have analyzed the happiness levels of athletes from the Barcelona, London, and Rio Olympics and found a consistent pattern: the gold medalist is the happiest, followed by the bronze medalist, while the silver medalist often appears the least content.

The main reason researchers identified is that silver medalists tend to experience a sense of regret, thinking that if they had just pushed a little harder, they could have won the gold.

Additionally, silver medals are usually awarded after a loss, whereas bronze medals are often won after a victory, which adds to the feeling of defeat even with a second-place finish.

Christian Reflection

Now, let’s reflect on this phenomenon and draw some spiritual insights.

I believe a common struggle for many people is how they perceive their circumstances.

The silver medalist, despite their remarkable achievement, focuses on the missed opportunity for gold, leading to disappointment. In contrast, the bronze medalist chooses to focus on the blessing of making it to the podium, resulting in gratitude and joy.

This reminds me of 1 Timothy 6:6-8:

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.”

Imagine if people were more content. We would all be happier, more fulfilled, and more at peace with ourselves.

The greatest lesson here is that our joy isn’t determined by how much we have, but by how much we appreciate what we have.

So, choose happiness.

Choose to appreciate.

Choose to be grateful.

Life is full of blessings, and you’ll never run out of things to be thankful for.
