Today’s reading: Jeremiah 17:9-10

The wicked heart

We read in Jeremiah 17:9-10:

9 “The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?

10 I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

You probably have heard the popular advice, “Just follow your heart.” “Just do what makes you happy.” “Just do it.”

However, as followers of Yahshua, we are not to follow our hearts. We read in Jeremiah’s writing that the heart is deceitful above all things. It is even desperately wicked.

That’s why you should not simply follow your heart and trust your understanding. Because of sin, our heart becomes deceitful. It makes us think that we are better than God. It makes us believe that we know more than God.

As a result, we disobey and rebel against our Creator. We thought that was the right decision, but no, it is exactly the opposite.

Instead of following your heart, follow what God wants you to do. Don’t simply make plans and hope they will work. Always go to God for wisdom and guidance.

God continually searches out our hearts. He tests our minds. From there, he determines what will happen with the decisions we make in this life.

Thankfully, our hearts may be corrupt, but God will transform our hearts. That process begins now. When we are called by God and we accept His invitation, we are taking the first step to make our hearts right with God.

The more we walk with God, the more we study His word, and the more we do His will and fulfill His purpose, we are making our hearts tuned in with the heart of God.

Yes, we started out with a wicked and deceitful heart, but it will not always be that way. With God’s help and His spirit, we can all have a heart of flesh and not a heart of stone.
