Today’s reading: Philippians 3:7-8

Losing is gaining

We read in Philippians 3:7-8:

7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.

In previous verses, Paul recounted all that he has accomplished in his life. His impressive resume made him one of the best in his league. He was no doubt a learned man who could have made a great name for himself.

However, all these achievements, accolades, and religious pedigree are nothing for him if he didn’t have Christ in his life. He even called them rubbish, which in the Greek word literally means, “cow’s dung.”

Yes, the same thing can also be said about our earthly accomplishments. All the wealth, prestige, respect, and accomplishments we have done are simply cow’s dung compared to what we gain through Yahshua.

This doesn’t mean that we should stop doing our best, pursue a career, and seek to have a comfortable life. Paul was simply saying that whatever we have gained in this life is simply nothing compared to what we can gain from God.

Truly, all the riches in this world are nothing if you don’t have God in your life. Our attitude should be like that of Paul. Whatever we have lost in doing God’s work, those are actually gained in God.

We lost something. God gives us something better.

I remember a quote from Jim Elliot. He said:

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.

Indeed, we give up the things that we can lose so that we get the things we can never lose!

If you lose something from God, it will never be wasted. God will surely give you more than what you lost.

Ultimately, God’s reward is much better than whatever reward we receive from this world.
