Today’s reading: 1 Corinthians 3:5-8

God gives the increase

We read in 1 Corinthians 3:5-8:

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

Sometimes, the church is divided because of its leaders. Some look upon human leaders and follow them instead of following God. In the Corinthian church, we are seeing that this is an issue. Some are of Paul while others are of Apollos.

The Apostle Paul is telling us that we must stop dividing ourselves based on our preferred leader or preacher. As He explained, human beings can only do so much work, but ultimately, it is God who will give the increase. It is the Almighty who calls us to His church, not any human being.

Remember that when you plant a seed, all you can do is provide the right environment, protect the seed, and nurture the seed. However, it is really not you who makes the seed grow. No one has the ability to grow a plant. It’s the miracle of life that allows the plant to burst forth from the seed and grow. And that miracle comes from God.

Another lesson we can learn here is that we are called to different tasks and ministries. Some are called to plant while others are called to water. When we do jobs that God called us to do, we focus on that. We don’t get frustrated because we are not getting the job that others do.

Moreover, let us remember that it is God who gives us the increase. There are times when we can be frustrated. We did our best. We planted and watered. Yet, we don’t see an increase.

We could never know all things that God is doing. As long as we are doing what God has called us to do — we preach and share the Gospel — we can be at peace. We can be confident to know that our labor is not in vain and God will give the increase in places He knows best.
