Today’s reading: Psalms 90:9-12

Teach us to number our days

We read in Psalms 90:9-12:

9 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.

10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.

12 So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

The more I grow older, the more I realize how important it is for us to number our days. Sadly, a lot of us understand how short life is as we approach the end of our rope. As the sun sets on our lives, that’s the time how much time we have left and how time flies so fast.

In this Psalm, we read how short life is. We may reach eighty years and yet, that is still too short if you think about it. One day you are a teenager, then the next day you’re approaching your retirement.

In my case, if God will bless me with 70 years, I’m almost at the midpoint of my life. I look back at my life and count all the wasted time that I could never get back. All I can do is ponder upon the briefness of life and do my best to use the remaining years of my life doing the will of God.

That’s why, if you want to be wise, you need to number your days. Death is a great reminder that tomorrow is not guaranteed to everyone. We don’t have the assurance that we will be here next week, next month, or next year.

Life is super unpredictable. You may be healthy now, but you don’t know the danger looming ahead. I’m not here to discourage you but the sooner we accept the reality of our existence, the sooner we understand that time is limited and thus, our choices are limited as well.

Instead of going after things that perish, why not chase after those things that are eternal? Instead of spending your time accumulating earthly pleasures and possessions, why not spend your life doing the work of God and laying treasures in heaven?

Don’t waste your time on things that won’t help you grow spiritually. Don’t harbor hatred, bitterness, and resentment. Don’t bring those things to your grave.

Instead, look for ways to enrich your relationship with other people. Do good whenever you can. Improve your life so that you can also improve others. Above all, seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

So that when you finally lie on your deathbed, you can look back and say, “I have lived a blessed, faithful, and fulfilling life.”

  1. this is very scary yet true, because no one can cheat or avoid death…and that we’re all responsible and accountable for what we do, the time we invest in, our thoughts, etc. as well as our own lives…and gosh guess life’s really that short and our days oh limited…
