Today’s reading: Acts 13:44-45

The deadly effect of envy

We read in Acts 13:44-45:

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.

The Jews didn’t like what they were seeing. All their lives, they believed they were special and other non-Jewish people were unclean.

So, you can just imagine their reaction when they see how God has opened the door of salvation to the Gentiles.

What was their response?

They were filled with envy. Proverbs 14:30 tells us that envy rots the bones. Envy leads to a lot of spiritual and physical diseases that could ultimately lead to our own destruction.

People become envious when they see other people getting what they don’t have. The mindset of envious people is that if I can’t have it, no one should have it as well.

When the Jews saw how God was working with the Gentiles, they tried their best to oppose Paul. In fact, they were successful in driving Paul and Barnabas out of the region.

Envy is a problem of the heart. Peter wrote that we must get rid of envy before it destroys us (I Peter 2:1). Since envy is rooted in dissatisfaction, then the cure would be contentment with godliness.

If you are feeling envious right now, remember how this attitude could lead to greater problems in the future. It is best to get rid of envy as soon as possible. Remember how God has blessed you in so many ways and know there’s really no reason for us to get envious.
