Today’s reading: Leviticus 11:44-45

Pursuit of Holiness

The majority of Christians and non-Christians today don’t follow the dietary law we read in Leviticus 11. So many people think it’s an outdated law abolished by Yahshua (Jesus) at the cross.

However, if there’s one reason that we must keep God’s food law, it is this:

44 For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 45 For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. Leviticus 11:44-45

Holiness is a serious and significant commandment to God. Holiness means being set apart and that’s exactly what God’s laws are doing for us. It is setting us apart from other people.

When we keep the Food Law, it inevitably sets us apart from unbelievers. We become conscious of what we eat.

We don’t become like other people who will eat anything they can put in their mouths. We have a special diet prescribed by our Creator. It eliminates and lessens the chances that we mingle with the paganistic way of this world.

Just like the Israelites who were kept from the wicked ways of their heathen neighbors through the food laws, we are also encouraged to stay away from worldly friends, families, and colleagues and be closer to our spiritual brethren.

This is not to say we avoid people outside of our faith, but rather we are being taught to become holy, to be set apart, to choose like-minded people over people who don’t respect God’s laws.

May these words stay in our hearts and minds:

You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
