Fear.

Everyone fears something.

Since we were a child until we grow old, we all have fears.

Whether you like it or not, you have been filled with fear at least once in your life. Fear is a common human emotion that is deeply wired in our subconscious and conscious mind.

It is natural for us to fear, but it doesn’t mean that it should control our lives. Uncontrolled fear can lead to irrational thinking, behaviors, and worst, spiritual paralysis and death.

In this post, let us take a look at one of the strongest emotions that we all experience. Let us examine the Bible and see what it says about fear and how to overcome it.

Here are 7 biblical keys to overcoming fear!

7 Biblical Keys to Overcoming Fear
How to overcome fear according to the Bible?

Biblical key no. 1: Realize that God is with you

People fear a lot of things. People fear about what the future brings, corrupt officials, illnesses, death, terrorist attacks, financial crisis, and the list goes on and on.

The problem with fear, when not controlled, may lead to spiritual growth retardation. Instead of moving forward with faith, you stay within your comfort zone.

Thankfully, the Bible tells us in Isaiah 41:10:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

This verse gives us the reason to never be fearful. We must not fear because God is with us. Other passages confirm why we should not be afraid.

We read:

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me (Psalms 118:6)?

Having God on your side is more than enough for you to never be afraid of what the future holds.

If God protects you from all forms of harm, why should you fear? If God is on your side, what can man do to you?

The same sentiment is expressed in Psalms 23:4 where it says:

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Imagine this for a second: God is with you. The same God who is the Supreme Ruler of the entire universe. The same God who made heavens and the earth. The same God who holds all the power to protect you.

Will you then still be afraid? The logical answer should be NO. Of course, it is easier said than done. That’s why you need the other Biblical keys mentioned in this blog.

So, let’s continue.

Biblical key no. 2: Trust in God

I once read a bumper sticker and it goes like this:

“Every opportunity to fear is also an opportunity to trust God.”

Just to make sure that sticks to your mind, let me repeat once again. “Every opportunity to fear is also an opportunity to trust God.”

I strongly believe that this is something that we all should remember.

Every time we are afraid, we must see it as an opportunity to surrender everything in God’s hands.

We simply trust Him that all things will work out together for good as long as we are doing our part (Romans 8:28).

We read in Psalms 56:3-4:

Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You…
In God I have put my trust;
I WILL NOT FEAR.
What can flesh do to me?

In most cases, when we are afraid, we are powerless.

We really can’t do anything about most things we fear. You can’t control terrorists from bombing shopping malls. You can’t prevent natural disasters from destroying your city. You can’t prevent death from knocking your door.

It is appointed for all of us to die once (Hebrews 9:27).

So, why should we fear?

Instead, just surrender your fear to God and trust Him that He will do what is best for you. After all, God is our heavenly Father. Like a father who protects his children, so is God who will protect us from evil.

Biblical key no. 3: Seek the Peace of God

Fear brings turmoil in our hearts and minds. When we are filled with so much fear, we can’t think properly. It seems everything that we do is subject to danger. We are constantly stricken with the thought that things can go wrong.

Thankfully, Jesus/Yahshua left us His peace. We read:

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Jesus gives us a reason why we must not be afraid. He gives us peace and this should assuage our fear.

But you may ask, how can peace extinguish fear in our heart?

The simple answer is that the two are contrary to each other. You can’t have both peace and fear at the same time. It is either you are peaceful or fearful.

It can’t be both.

The peace that Jesus brings originates from Him. It is NOT something that you ordinarily get from the world. For most people, peace is the absence of conflict and war. But for God, peace having an intimate and close relationship with Him.

Peace is having God in your life. Peace comes from the assurance and belief that God is always in control.

When you are filled with this type of peace, then you can cast away fear from your heart.

Biblical key no. 4: Be filled with love

God is love and those who follow God must also be filled with love.

If we want to get rid of fear, we must replace it with something. If we keep our minds empty, fear can easily return.

That’s why we read in I John 4:18:

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

Now, here’s one of the most important keys to getting rid of fear: We must be filled with love.

We can cast out fear with love.

But how?

Love is an affection and emotion that does NOT produce any fear. In fact, if we truly love God, we should not fear anything!

We don’t need to fear death because after death, if we are secure with God, we can be confident that we will meet our Creator during our next waking moment.

As long as we have love in our hearts and lives, we can expect fear to never bother us. The moment that our love wavers, that’s the same moment that fear starts to creep in again.

When love prevails, fear stops from existing.

When love overcomes, fear is suppressed.

And when love reigns, fear is banished.

Biblical key no. 5: Fear God instead

There’s a type of fear in the Bible that is completely opposite to the spirit of fear. It is the fear of the Lord. It is the type of fear that is encouraged in the Bible. Every Christian should have this fear.

If we are to get rid of fear, we must replace it with the right type of fear.

In the Bible, there are a lot of passages that commands us to fear God. Let me share just some of them:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7).

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death (Proverbs 14:27).

If we are to fear, we must fear God instead.

But what does fearing God really mean?

Fearing God means that we must respect and revere Him. Fearing God does not cripple or paralyze us, but rather it keeps us from sinning. When we fear God, we submit to His will and therefore, we rather follow His commandments.

Instead of fearing what the future holds for us, we must fear God who is able to deliver us from all types of danger. By fearing God, we can delight more in his commandments (Psalms 112:1), be wiser (Proverbs 9:10), and ultimately, be saved from eternal death (Matthew 10:28).

Biblical key no. 6: Be strong and of good courage

When Moses died, Israel lost a great leader. Now, it was time for Joshua to take the baton. However, the Israelites were afraid. They didn’t know whether Joshua would have the same authority and leadership as what they saw in Moses.

During this time, Joshua needed encouragement. The people were afraid and they also need an assurance from God. In Joshua 1, you will see the command, “Be strong and of good courage” had been repeated three times, signifying finality.

We read one of them:

“Have I not commanded you? BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9, compare verse 6 and 7).

It is worth noting that God actually commanded Joshua to be STRONG and of GOOD COURAGE. It isn’t a request of God or some mere suggestions but it is a command.

Instead of fearing, God encourages these people to be strong and be courageous. But what does this mean?

It means that they should not stay weak. They must be strong in the LORD. They must obtain their strength from the Supreme Eternal God.

Being strong isn’t enough but they must also be courageous. Being courageous means that they should have the confidence to do what God wants them to do. Though things may not seem to go your way, being courageous means that you are able to move forward as you trust God.

God specifically describes the type of courage that they should have. It should be a GOOD courage.

People can be brave without having the right wisdom. They can be reckless, not fearing anything. For them, that’s how to be brave.

However, God wants Joshua and the Israelites to have a different kind of courage, to have the courage to do what is right and proper in God’s eyes.

By being strong and courageous, YOU CAN DEFINITELY OVERCOME FEAR.

Biblical key no. 7: Pray to God

One of the best ways to overcome fear is to simply surrender all your fear unto God.

We can only do so much. There comes a point in our life that we are powerless, that the situation is beyond our control. Thus, what we can do, and we MUST do, is present our fears in the hands of our heavenly Father.

Psalms 34:4 tells us:

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

When King David’s spirit is in tumult, when his fears are too difficult to handle, when his mind is tormented by worry, he “sought the Lord.”

When we seek God with all our hearts, he will hear us and deliver us from all our fears. When you are fearful, bend your knees, put your hands together, and pray to God.

God is more than willing to deliver us and eliminate the disturbance produced by fear.

Final Words

These are the most powerful and effective biblical keys to overcoming fear. They are the keys to unlocking a life free of the spirit of fear. By using these keys, you will open a floodgate of peace, joy, and blessings.

I hope you learned a lot from this post. It is my sincerest hope that you move forward with courage, hope, and faith. NEVER forget even a second in your life that God is with you and He will protect you.

Instead of fearing the bad things that might happen to you, we must fear God and do His will in our lives.

… And that’s how you overcome fear in your life. 🙂
