Today’s reading: John 19:12

Are you a Christian or a politician?

We read in John 19:12:

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

There’s a danger of wanting to please other people to the point that you compromise your beliefs and principles. One good example is Pontius Pilate.

Pilate, after interrogating Yahshua, came to the conclusion that the accused was innocent. From there, he wanted to release Yahshua.

The problem was that the people pressed him to give the go signal of executing Yahshua. What was the main bait of the people? Caesar.

Pilate couldn’t afford to be labeled as someone who went against Caesar. In truth, he was never a friend of Caesar. Caesar might just barely know Pilate.

Although Pilate knew what the right thing to do was, he chose to please the people. He chose to preserve his position and power.

It’s quite interesting that in John 19:13, we read:

When Pilate, therefore, heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Pilate thought that he was the one judging Yahshua. In reality, it was Pilate who was being judged. God was looking at Pilate whether he would do the right thing or not.

As you can see, brethren, there’s a danger of seeking to please other people more than we please God. If we break God’s commandment in order to please others, then we are not becoming followers of Yahshua, but followers of men.

On judgment day, we will stand before Yahshua and not men. It is Yahshua who will judge us and when that time comes, you will be glad that you sought to please God rather than men.
