Today’s reading: Leviticus 25:21-22

Land Sabbath, Jubilee, and trust in God

Leviticus 25 is filled with powerful lessons we can learn today.

The land Sabbath was explained in Leviticus 25. It happens every seventh year when the land shall be given a rest. The land shouldn’t be used during this time.

Now, every fifty years, the Jubilee year shall be kept. This one is a truly significant event. Imagine, in the 49th year, you can’t till your land. In the 50th year, you also won’t be able to till your land.

That’s why, in Leviticus 25:20, we read:

20 ‘And if you say, “What shall we eat in the seventh year, since we shall not sow nor gather in our produce?”

It is only natural for the human mind to be worried or at least concerned about what they shall eat because once the Jubilee comes, there will be two consecutive years they will not sow and gather!

Now, this is a great test of faith.

Yahweh was actually teaching His people to have total dependence on Him!

Notice the response of Yahweh to the question above in Leviticus 25:21-22:

21 Then I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it will bring forth produce enough for three years. 22 And you shall sow in the eighth year, and eat old produce until the ninth year; until its produce comes in, you shall eat of the old harvest.

Put yourself in the place of the Israelites at that time, would you be able to trust God and take Him to His word?

Would you really be able to believe that in the sixth year, there will be enough produce that will sustain you for three years?

Would you be able to believe God when He says He will COMMAND His blessings so that you will have enough food for the following years?

Personally, I would struggle to follow the Land Sabbath and Jubilee. However, this is the kind of faith Elohim wants us to have!

Following the land Sabbath and the Jubilee year is a powerful testament of you stepping out of faith!

Moreover, keeping these laws could also help you be more compassionate to the poor people in the land. Every year, you experience what poor people experience and this ultimately helps you place your trust and confidence not on your wealth, but on the Most High.
