Kobe Bryant and What Death Should Teach You

A sad news today, my friends.

You probably have heard and seen this on TV.

It’s all over the social media from Facebook to Twitter.

Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter accident together with his daugther and other passengers.

Kobe Bryant is no doubt a household name.

He has won 5 NBA championships and won 2 Finals MVP award.

He has reached a pinnacle of success that so many of us could only dream of.

However, his life was cut short.

He was only 41 years old when he died.

I remember when I was still in high school and watching this amazing athlete play in the NBA.

Every time we play basketball, everyone wants to be Kobe.

I remember before we shoot a crumpled paper to the trash bin, we would shout, “Kobe!”

Now, you might ask, what is so special about Kobe’s death?

Most importantly, as Christians, what should we learn from it?

You see, people are dying each day.

In fact, as I write this blog, there are people dying in every part of the world.

So, what makes Kobe’s death special?

Well, it is because he was rich and famous.

His death attracted a lot of attention.

A lot of people would consider him a successful man and he could have done more if he was still alive.

Death is no doubt a grim reminder of how fragile life is

It tells us that it is the greatest equalizer. Whether you are rich or poor, young or old, you will certainly taste death.

I think what makes this news special is that sometimes, being rich and famous creates an air of invincibility

It seems that those who are rich are immune to accidents and even death.

It’s hard for us to imagine people like Kobe to be dying in accidents.

After all, they have all the money to prevent that.

But the death of Kobe shows us that no one is really exempted.

Even the rich, with all their wealth, can’t buy back their life when death knocks on the door.

As for us, the living, let us not forget the fact that anyone can die at any moment.

You and I don’t have the guarantee that we will still be among the living who will greet the morning sun.

You don’t know when your life will end.

It could be tomorrow, next week, or next year.

For this reason, we must remember what King David wrote in Psalm 90:12:

So, teach us to number our days that we may gain wisdom.

If you want to be wiser, number your days.

Always remember that your time here on earth is just limited.

You won’t live forever.

Like Kobe, you don’t know when your life is up.

That’s why we must seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

When you die, all your accomplishments, all your worldly possessions, all the fame and glory you have accumulated, will all come to nothing, except for one thing – your godly character.

Yes, it is tragic for someone to die all of sudden and that includes the death of Kobe.

However, let us not waste this opportunity to learn what death can teach us.

So, go out there.

Love those who love you.

Pray for those who hate you.

Do your best in everything you do because you never know when your life is up.

Most importantly, don’t forget your relationship with God, because, at the end of it all, that’s the only thing that will matter.
