Genesis 1:1-2: Does the Bible Support the Young Earth Theory?

So many skeptics today use Genesis 1:1-2 to prove that the Bible is in error. For some Christians and non-Christians alike, they believe that the Bible teaches that the creation of the earth happened approximately 6,000 years ago. However, scientific evidence points out that the Earth’s age spans billions of years. They then use this argument to say that we cannot really trust the Bible and all that is written in it. After all, if the first verses of the first book of the Bible are scientifically inaccurate and false, how can you seriously take all the other claims of the Bible as true?

On the other hand, what is the Bible doesn’t really say that the earth is only 6,000 years old? What if the Bible is really in congruence with the scientific evidence? It is time you know the truth!

Does the Bible Support the Young Earth Theory

What does Genesis 1:1-2 say and does not say?

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

From these verses, we don’t see the Bible claiming that the earth is young and only 6,000 years old. On the contrary, a deeper understanding and examination of these verses reveal an ASTOUNDING TRUTH that most of this world’s scholars and even Christians DON’T know!

The Hebrew word translated “was” in verse two is hayah. If you look into Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionary, this word can also be translated as “became.” By doing so, it gives us the possibility that there was something that happened between verses 1 and 2 of Genesis 1.

So in review, we can read:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth BECAME without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”

With this in mind, verse 1 is talking about the FIRST CREATION of the heaven and the earth! Then in verse 2, SOMETHING happened to the original creation that it became WITHOUT FORM and VOID. Now, remember when God creates something, it is in perfect beauty and order. He is not the “author of confusion” (I Corinthians 14:33). So from beauty, His creation became without form and void.

Isaiah 45:18 gives more details about the original creation:

“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, HE CREATED IT NOT IN VAIN, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

Notice, the Hebrew word for “in vain” here is tohu, the same word rendered as “without form” in Genesis 1:2. So Isaiah is telling us that the original earth was created beautiful and not in decay.

A time gap between verses 1 and 2

The BURNING question now is, WHAT HAPPENED that had caused God’s original creation to become without form and void? Isaiah 14:12-15 sheds some light on this question:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

The angels were created before the original creation of the earth, and they were there to shout for joy when it all began (Job 38:7). One of these angels is a high ranking cherub named Lucifer. He led a rebellion against God and war broke out in heaven. His rebellion CAUSED the destruction of the original created earth.

Conclusion

As we have read, there is actually a “time gap” between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, from the original creation of the earth to the RE-creation of the earth. This time gap opens up the possibility that the earth can actually be billions of years old as what scientific evidence shows us.

In the end, science doesn’t disprove the Bible, but science actually SUPPORTS the Bible. There is no contradiction between science and the Bible. There is really no Science versus the Bible argument. They are in congruence because God is the Supreme Ruler and Creator of this vast universe! The evidence of this claim is found all around us and science is there to prove that.

  1. Hi Joshua 🙂

The Bible supports and needs an young earth in order to be true, because God did create the universe in 6 literal days, (it is literal, not poetic) not billion of years, as evolutionary models predict, Even Jesus pointed that in the beginning God created Man. Also the genealogies from Adam to Jesus, the fall due to sin, and many others aspects. An old earth would mean death before sin, wich would invalidate Genesis and the word of God. And the Big Bang is a secular explanation for the origin of the universe, wich lefts god out of the picture. Mix both and you will ending contradicting yourself, they are not compatible since they contradict each other. Even the sequences of creation are completely different, so they cannot coexist, both cannot be true at the same time. Study/research more before post this time of topics, because in the end you will have to take one of extremes, or creation (young) or evolution (old).

And the time gap (gap theory) is nothing more than crap xD. We cannot put billion of years inside literal days, does not make any sense, and does not work.

Let’s be real, If creation is true, then darwinian evolution is not, and vice versa.
I also believe that God created the universe, as written in the Bible (but literally xD ) 🙂

Research both sides of scientists, explore all science fields (biology, genetics, geology, astronomy, physics, etc) and then see were the evidence points to, and then take your position, (being in the middle make us useful idiots xD). These are real profound existential questions, and no one has the answer. Everyone has faith, the theists in God, the atheists in matter and energy or any other unknown force/mechanism.

We are always learning (me too ! 🙂 ) and learning make us better, humble and is one of our human capabilities that we all enjoy to discover 🙂

You seem very simple and good young person (with a beautiful and captivating smile), and have an entire life in front of you ! 🙂

Keep your faith alive, share with the others and never be afraid of tell what you believe 🙂

Wish you the best, and good blogging ! 😉

God Bless you and your family, dear human brother, and peace for us all in our good Earth 😉

    • Hello John,

      I appreciate your comment.

The young earth theory is not needed to prove the Bible is true. As what my blog say, there’s a time gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Remember, Genesis 1 says that the “earth is without form and void.” It shows us that the earth is already there. So what made the earth without form and void? It was caused by the rebellion of the angels headed by Satan. These leaves us the possibility that millions or billions of years could have passed from the first create to the RE-creation of the earth. Please refer to my blog for more details.

I agree that the re-creation week took place within literal 7 days. I also believe that the age of man is just about 6,000 years. I don’t believe in the theory of evolution or the big bang theory.

You misunderstood my blog. I didn’t mean that the whole creation week took billions of years. My point here is that the time gap happens between when the universe started until the time God recreated the earth. Somewhere in the middle Satan and his demons rebelled.

True science and the Bible do not contradict. In fact, science points to the existence of God.
