You might already have heard the news about the upcoming rare total solar eclipse that’s going to take place on April 8, 2024. This solar eclipse would cause nighttime-like darkness and because the moon is closer, the length of darkness would also be longer.

What is going to happen on April 8, 2024

Now, here’s what makes the April 8 solar eclipse extraordinary and unique: In the US, the path of totality starts in Texas and traverses through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, effectively cutting a slash across the United States. What’s even more astonishing is that simultaneously, a comet dubbed the “Devil’s Comet” is set to pass by Earth during the eclipse.

Reading the heavenly signs

For some preachers, teachers, and religious leaders, look at the solar eclipse as a bad omen from God. Could this be true? Could the April 8 solar eclipse be a sign from God? Will it mark an upcoming significant event? Will this solar eclipse be a sign of the coming doom and destruction of the United States or will it mark the start of something big that’s going to happen?

What does the Bible say about April 8 solar eclipse?

Obviously, the April 8, solar eclipse has caused a lot of speculations in the Christian circle. However, what does the Bible truly say?

First and foremost, the Bible does say that heavenly bodies serve as a sign for God’s people. We have seen how solar eclipses and astronomical phenomena have been connected to significant events.

For example, in the Bible, we know that the sun and moon are used to mark God’s appointed days or Holy Days such as the Passover, Day of Unleavened Bread, and Feast of Tabernacles, to name a few.

We read in Genesis 1 verse 14:

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years.

The Hebrew word for seasons in this verse actually means appointed times, referring to God’s Holy Days. However, this verse talks more about the heavenly bodies serving as a sign so we know when to keep the Holy Days.

In Mark 15 verse 33, we read how darkness engulfed the whole land during the crucifixion of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ or properly known as Yahshua. We read:

Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 

Later that day, we read how a huge earthquake caused the veil of the temple to be torn in two, from top to bottom. We see here that heavenly signs and earthquakes come together.

Revelation 6 verse 12 also seems to suggest how heavenly signs and earthquakes could happen almost at the same time:

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.

There are more verses that talk about heavenly signs as being part of the end times. We read in Isaiah 13 verse 9 to 10:

Behold, the day of the LORD comes, Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, To lay the land desolate; And He will destroy its sinners from it.  For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine.

Does April 8, 2024, lead to the end times?

However, could the total solar eclipse on April 8 signal an important prophetic event happening soon? Well, for me it’s difficult to be sure 100 percent. Remember, eclipses are actually quite frequent occurrences. Total solar eclipses happen approximately every 18 months somewhere on Earth, while partial solar eclipses occur several times a year.

Additionally, total lunar eclipses take place virtually every year in most regions. Since the time the Bible spoke about heavenly signs, there have been thousands of both total and partial solar and lunar eclipses. None of them appear to have held any significance in relation to end-times Bible prophecy. Therefore, predicting whether a future eclipse will have ties to the end times should not be taken dogmatically.

What we need to realize is that the prophecies that have to do with heavenly signs are events that are going to happen before the coming of our Messiah. There are still so many Bible prophecies that need to be fulfilled before the second coming of Yahshua. Therefore, it’s certain that the April 8 solar eclipse is not the one foretold in the Bible as a precursor to Christ’s return.

Notice Matthew 24 verse 29:

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 

Yes, we have seen in the past how the sun is darkened and the moon does not give its light. However, we don’t see stars, which most likely refer to meteors, falling from heaven or the powers of the heavens being shaken.

Be always prepared

While it’s fascinating to look at solar eclipses and determine their prophetic significance, what we should do is prepare ourselves for Christ’s second coming. We must always be ready because of that hour and day, no one knows. If we die tonight, can we truly tell ourselves, we are ready? We need to repent of our sins, turn from our wicked ways, and start living God’s purpose for our lives.

Furthermore, on April 8, 2024, take a moment to pause and marvel at God’s majestic creation, witnessing one of the most captivating astronomical events of our modern era. Observing the intricate workings of our remarkable universe should deepen our appreciation for God, the supremely powerful Being who lovingly chose to be our Father.
