Where is Russia Mentioned in the Bible?

Have you wondered where Russia is mentioned in the Bible? If yes, you came to the right place. In this post, let us go through some of the most significant Biblical prophecies that reveal to us the role Russia plays in the end times!

Russia, a global power

Russia makes up 11% of the world’s landmass, making it the biggest country in the world, almost twice the size of Canada. As a result, Russia enjoys access to about 30% of the world’s natural resources.

The economy of Russia relies on oil and natural gas. In fact, they are among the largest exporters and producers of oil.

Aside from being a huge country, it is also one of the world’s top military powers. Consider the following about Russia:

  • Russia has the largest tank forces in the world
  • Their air force and the navy fleet took the number 2 spot in the world
  • Russia spends $61.7 billion for its military in 2020, making them the fourth country with the largest military expenditure
Will the Bible ignore the largest country in the world and would not talk about it?

Does the Bible ignore Russia?

Now, here’s the question for you: could Russia, the largest country in the world with significant economic and military power be ignored by the Bible?

If the Bible mentioned less significant countries, does it make sense for it to ignore Russia?

You’ll be surprised but Russia has been there in the pages of the Bible all along.

All you need to do is know where to look for, what to look for, and most importantly, the inspiration of the Most High, Yahweh, the supreme Ruler of this vast universe!

Only divine revelation can tell us about Russia’s future. No other sources are reliable, but the Word of God.

Russia comprises about 11% of the world’s landmass and controls 30% of its natural resources.

A book of Prophecies

Whether you believe it or not, prophecies are a huge part of the inspired word of God. Some even estimate that about a third of the Bible is about prophecies!

Now, that’s a huge chunk of the Scriptures.

If you want to know what the future holds, you don’t need to look far. You just have to open your Bible and there, future events are written in advance!

What does the Bible say about the law of God
It is estimated that a third of the Bible is prophecy.

Notice what Isaiah 46:8-11 tells us:

8 “Remember this, and show yourselves men;
Recall to mind, O you transgressors.

9 Remember the former things of old,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done
,
Saying, My counsel shall stand,
And I will do all My pleasure,’

11 … Indeed I have spoken it;
I will also bring it to pass.

I have purposed it;
I will also do it

Some prophecies in the Bible have already been fulfilled by the letter. However, more prophecies should come to pass.

Among these prophecies include Russia and other end-time superpowers.

Read on to learn more!

The Prophet Daniel Wrote About Russia

Daniel was one of the most prominent prophets mentioned in the Bible. He lived around 620-538 B.C. He has seen the rise and fall of Babylon and Assyria. He also saw how the Medo-Persian kingdom brought Assyria to its knees.

The prophet Daniel wrote about Russia in the Bible.

For us to know where Russia is in Bible prophecy, we are going to look at Daniel’s writing, particularly in  Daniel 11:40-45:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.

41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.

44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him.

Now, this can be a mouthful of verses to digest. Before we dig deeper, we must establish that these verses talk about future events.

The reason is that some Bible students would suggest that these verses only pertained to past events.

So, how can we prove that these verses are about future events?

Notice Daniel 12:1-2:

1 “At that time Michael shall stand up,
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;

And there shall be a time of trouble,
Such as never was since there was a nation,
Even to that time.

And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book.

2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Obviously, these passages talk about future events and in context, that includes Daniel 11:40-45.

Establishing our point of reference

To avoid confusion, we must first understand that when Daniel was writing these words, he was thinking of Jerusalem as the point of reference.

Jerusalem is the focal point of reference when reading and understanding biblical prophecies.

So, when it talks about the king of the north, king of the south, news from the east and the north, he was talking about Jerusalem as the focal point of these directions.

Identifying key players in Daniel’s prophecy

Now, we are getting closer and closer to knowing where Russia is in Bible prophecy.

In Daniel 11:40-45, we read about the following:

  • King of the North
  • King of the South

Who are these kings?

The king of the north refers to the end-time Roman Empire that will rise from Europe, which will most likely be headed by Germany along with 10 kings or 10 nations.

The king of the south refers to an alliance of nations that is located to the south of modern-day Israel and to some extent, includes westward countries.

We read that the King of the South would include Moab, Edom, Ammon (modern-day Jordan), Cush, Phut, and Egypt.

If you look into the religious characteristics of these countries, they are Muslim countries.

The clash of kings

You might be asking, where is Russia? So far, I haven’t told you yet.

Now, stay with me because it is crucial to understand first what the kings of the north and south will do in the future. What they do will influence Russia’s decision in the end-times.

So, what happened to the king of the North and the South?

Let’s read Daniel 11:40 again:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.

So, we see how the king of the South started a war against the king of the North.

Why?

The reason could be that the Southern King would like to restore the former glory of Islam in Europe. If you look into history, Islamic empires stretched and reigned in parts of Portugal, Spain, Eastern Europe, France, Italy, and Sicily.

Ultimately, the King of the South would like to capture Rome, the symbol of the European religion of Christianity.

The defeat of the king of the south

The king of the south will strike the king of the north. However, we see how they will fail and will be defeated by the king of the North.

Bible prophecies foretell the coming World Superpower that will rise from Europe
Bible prophecies foretell the coming World Superpower that will rise from Europe

We read in Daniel 11:40-43:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships

We see here how the counterattack of the king of the North overwhelmed the king of the south.

“… And he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown

After defeating the king of the South, the king of the North, which is the revived Roman Empire coming from Europe will enter the Glorious Land, which is Jerusalem!

Not only that, but it will defeat so many nations as we read here:

“… But these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.

It is more likely that Europe will once again have control over Jerusalem and this is something that many other nations will not like.

Enter the Russian Bear

Here’s where things start to get more interesting. We are now about to find Russia in the pages of your Bible. We will finally understand where Russia is in biblical prophecy.

Remember, the king of the South attacked the king of the North, however, the North prevailed and defeated the South.

Now, the king of the North will occupy Jerusalem.

The Kings of the East will unite to fight the King of the North.
The Kings of the East will unite to fight the King of the North.

What happens next? Let’s read Daniel 11:44-45:

44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him.

Carefully take note of the term “the east and the north.” Possibly, this can also mean northeast.

Because of the great power of the king of the North, inevitably, the news will spread far and wide. A natural reaction is that the rest of the major powers will be alarmed. They will feel threatened.

So, which countries are we seeing on the map when we talk about the east and north of Israel?

No doubt, today, we see more Muslim countries in the east of Israel. We have Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United Arab Emirates!

If we go farther east, we also see India, which would most likely be involved in the conflict.

All these will not just feel alarmed but also incensed as they look at Jerusalem, their third-holiest city conquered by their mortal enemy!

Now, if we look at the north of Israel, we see more Muslim countries such as Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon.

Here’s where Russia enters the scene. Look at the north of Israel. What is the only superpower you see?

Yes, that’s right, it’s RUSSIA!

In Daniel 11:44, we read:

But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many.

The eastern and northern countries will plan an offensive attack. The King of the North would know about this plan and thus, this news would trouble him!

What was the result?

The King of the North will attack the northeastern countries, including Russia with great fury and will destroy and annihilate many!

While the King of the North thought that attacking first would be a good idea, in the end, we see how the eastern kingdoms would retaliate.

The Second Woe of Revelation

Revelation 9:13-19 gives us more details about what will happen during the battle between the King of the North and the “Eastern Kings.”

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

What we are reading here is actually modern military weapons. Since the Apostle John didn’t know what these things are, he would simply use simple terms to describe them.

Now, notice the vast army the eastern kings would gather. There will be 200 million soldiers who will be marching toward Jerusalem!

I can’t even fathom the huge number of this army. According to Statista, China has the biggest number of soldiers which is around 2 million. followed by India with about 1,450,000 million active military personnel.

Even if you combine all the armies of the top ten biggest armed forces, it will still be nothing compared to the massive army of the Kings of the east.

How can the eastern kings field such a huge army? There would be a confederation of nations that will unite together to take over Jerusalem and establish world dominance.

It could be that aside from the Muslim countries east of Israel, other nations farther east would join. These include Japan, India, and China. Other nations would also join such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

Today, we know the vast army coming from China and because it is allied with Russia, we are seeing the possibility that Russia would also join the war. With a population by the billions, raising a 200-million army is possible in the future!

The Battle of Armageddon

The march of the armies of the Eastern Kings, which include Russia, would lead to the greatest war in world history.

Today, most people call it the Battle of Armageddon.

We read in Revelation 16:12, 16:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared… 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon

So, the kings from the east will be marching forward toward Israel.

Ezekiel’s prophecy about Russia

Aside from the Books of Daniel and Revelation, the book of Ezekiel also gives us a glimpse of what Russia will do in the future.

After the great deluge, God commanded Noah to replenish the earth (Genesis 8:15-18). Noah had three sons; Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

In Genesis 10:2-3, we read about the sons of Japheth:

2 The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

This is something significant to take note of if we are going to identify Russia in the Bible.

Dr. Herman Hoeh, in his book, Compendium of World History, noted that Meshech and Tubal are the fathers of the people living in Russia today.

Magog in turn became China and Mongolia. Gomer became the father of the Japanese, Thais, Cambodians, Laos, Burmese, and Vietnamese people. Togarmah also contributed to the Japanese people.

With these identities in mind, we can better understand the amazing prophecy of Ezekiel in Ezekiel 38:1-9:

1 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. 5 Persia, Ethiopia [Cush], and Libya [Put] are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.

7 “Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. 8 After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. 9 You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”

So, this prophecy is addressed to the following:

  • Gog in the land of Magog – refers to northern Eurasia, which includes countries around the Baltic and Pacific region.
  • Meshech – refers to Moscow
  • Tubal – refers to Tobolsk
  • Prince of Rosh – Russia

So, according to Ezekiel, we will see Russia be in alliance with other bigger and smaller nations.

These countries, headed by the world’s superpower, including Russia, will be led out “with all [their] army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with [them].

This coincides with what we read in Daniel and Revelation.

We are seeing how the Bible consistently talks about a great army coming from the east, which will lead to the biggest war we can ever imagine.

A glorious future

The Bible describes a great turmoil in the future, so great that it has never happened before.

Yahshua or Jesus Christ talked about this in Matthew 24:21-22:

21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

Because of the great war, no one will survive. It will be a guaranteed extinction of mankind!

Thankfully, those days would be shortened through the coming of the promised Messiah. We can have this hope that in the end, it will not always be death and destruction.

For Yahweh has promised that He will send back His Son not as a helpless baby in a manger, but a conquering King, ready to establish God’s Kingdom on earth!

The Bible talks about when people will beat their swords into plowshares.
The Bible talks about when people will beat their swords into plowshares.

Isaiah 2:2-4 describe the beautiful world beyond the war caused by the Kings of the North, South, and East:

2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days
That the mountain of the LORD’s house
Shall be established on the top of the mountains,
And shall be exalted above the hills
;
And all nations shall flow to it.

3 Many people shall come and say,
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
He will teach us His ways,
And we shall walk in His paths
.”

For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

4 He shall judge between the nations,
And rebuke many people;

They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall NOT lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore
.

May the Almighty hasten this day!

Russia in Bible Prophecy

You just read where Russia is in your Bible and what role it would play in the end-time.

We see how the conflict between the King of the South and the King of the North dragged all the kings of the East, which include Russia, into a global conflict that threatened to wipe out all humans on the face of the planet.

Thankfully, the Messiah would return just in time to step into the affairs of men. No human beings can save us, only Yahshua can save us from our destructive ways.

On that day, every nation, including Russia, would be subject to the greatest Power in the entire universe.

On that day, real peace would at last cover the whole world.

On that day, prosperity, abundance, and good health would be experienced by many.

On that day, no more corrupt governments and human rules would again destroy civilization.

We can all look forward to that day when Christ will finally return and usher in the PERFECT Kingdom of God.

Indeed, may we all pray, “Let thy Kingdom come!”

  1. I have enjoyed my study time this information has inspired me to be even closer to God thank you.

  2. You should study Hebrew to understand the Bible. Magog has a very specific location which Hebrew points to modern day Turkey and Rosh means new, as in Rosh Hashanah or the New Year… not Moscow. Use Biblehub.com as a translating resource. Don’t take the word of some guy that wrote a book, use the Bible. It has all the details.
