What Does the Bible Say About Aliens?

Are we alone in this vast universe? Is there life out there? Are aliens real? Do unidentified flying objects or UFOs prove that some people have already made contact with extraterrestrial life?

There’s no doubt, human beings have been fascinated with the idea that there might be aliens living on other planets. Thus, it should not come as a surprise to see some people have become so passionate about finding life outside of Earth that a considerable amount of energy, time, and money have been poured into hunting for alien life.

But as we ponder the possibility of otherworldly beings, one question stands out with profound significance: What does the Bible say about aliens? Does the Bible say anything about extraterrestrial life? If yes, then how will that affect our faith?

In this blog, let us explore the topic of aliens, UFOs, and extraterrestrial life and see how these things fit in the Bible.

Listening for Radio Signals from Aliens

In 1966, Carl Sagan, the famous American Astronomer, concluded that for life to exist on a planet, there are just two conditions that should be met: one, the right kind of star, and two, a planet that is situated at the right distance from that same star.

Carl Sagan claimed that conditions for life to exist on other planets are easy to meet.

Since these two conditions can easily be met, Sagan and thousands of people concluded that there should be other planets aside from ours that are capable of supporting life.

Later, we would soon see that Sagan is wrong in his claim. As our understanding of the universe increased, scientists found out that there are more conditions that should be met before life exists. From two, which Sagan claimed, it has increased to more than 50 conditions. This has significantly lowered the chance of finding life outside of our solar system to the point that it is statistically impossible.

However, at that time, Sagan’s claim strengthened the growing interest of people in aliens coming to Earth. Thus, in the 1960s, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence or SETI started. Now, scientists with formal education have spearheaded the search for extraterrestrial life.

These are among the parabolic radio telescope that tries to find radio signals as part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

One of the biggest parts of SETI is the monitoring of electromagnetic radiation, which scientists believe to be signals coming from other intelligent beings outside of our planet. This gave birth to what is now called radio astronomy.

Frank Drake was at the forefront of the first project of listening for radio signals from deep space at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, West Virginia, in 1960. Today, the same project grew into having a wide array of supercomputers listening to 56 million radio channels all at once.

So, for more than 60 years of listening to radio signals, what did astronomers and researchers find? Nothing. The signals we hear from aliens are deafening. They have found no intelligent signals or messages from aliens as they optimistically expected.

Do UFOs Prove the Existence of Aliens?

Many people believe that aliens do exist. According to a survey made and published by Pew Research Center in 2021, about 65% of Americans believe that intelligent life exists outside Earth. That’s more than 6 out of 10 people!

Most of them would point to unidentified flying objects or UFOs to be proof of the existence of aliens. As the world becomes more digital and cameras are almost everywhere, there are more and more UFO sightings reported all over the world.

Unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings are used to prove aliens exist.

However, in spite of the many reported UFO sightings, very few scientists regard these reports as evidence for the existence of aliens from outer space.

Frank Drake, the leading astronomer in finding extraterrestrial intelligence who also firmly believes that there might be aliens, was skeptical about UFOs. In an article released by the Delacorte Press in 1992, Drake said, “No tangible evidence exists to suggest that we have ever been visited by an alien spacecraft. As strongly as I believe that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, I maintain that UFOs are not extraterrestrial visitors. They are the products of intelligent life on this planet.”

So, UFOs are not a strong indication of life outside of our planet. UFO sightings, as Drake mentioned, are more likely to be a product of human ingenuity.

What does the Bible say about Aliens?

We now come to the gist of our discussion. Does the Bible say anything about aliens? If yes, what could it be? Are there aliens according to the Bible?

Well, the answer is a resounding yes! However, these aliens aren’t what popular media or science fiction described them to be. They are way different than how most people imagined them to be.

The Bible talks about aliens, but not according to how popular media conceived them to be.

If you define aliens to be extraterrestrial beings who live outside of our planet, then yes, there are aliens and these aliens aren’t physical beings, but they are spiritual beings. They aren’t limited by matter, space, and time. They live outside of our physical existence and these Beings are super Beings. Since they are not physical, they are not subject to illnesses, decay, and death.

The very first verse in our Bible introduced us to this super Being, which you might technically consider an alien or an extraterrestrial intelligent Being.

We read Genesis 1:1:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

So, in the beginning, before there are human beings, we could see here that God already exists. Who is this God? We read in Isaiah 42:8:

I am the LORD, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.

In Hebrew, the LORD here refers to God’s true name, Yahweh. He is the Most High God, the supreme Ruler and Possessor of heaven and earth (Genesis 14:19). He is also our Father.

Aside from the Most High God, the Bible talks about a second Being who is part of the God Family. We read in Daniel 7:13-14:

13 “I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!

He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.

14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.

His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.

Obviously, this One who is like the Son of Man is no ordinary Being. Why? Because dominion, glory, and kingdom will be given to Him. Not only that, but all people will serve Him.

Who is this Son of Man? Obviously, it is no other than the God Being who became later as Jesus Christ (properly known as Yahshua the Messiah). This is supported by Christ’s constant use of the title Son of Man when He was on earth (Matthew 8:20; Mark 2:10; Luke 6:5; John 3:13).

Aside from Yahweh the Most High and the pre-incarnate Messiah. We also have angelic beings. These angels or messengers are also spiritual creatures that can take the form of men.

So, with all these verses, we can see that the Bible doesn’t speak of aliens such as the green creatures with long heads and big eyes. The Bible doesn’t talk about extraterrestrial intelligent beings that live on other planets.

Instead, what we see in the Bible is that there are spiritual, powerful Beings that live outside of the physical realm. God is one of them who inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15) and who resides in the third heaven where His throne is located (2 Corinthians 12:2).

Alien encounters in the Bible

What’s so amazing about this is that these spiritual beings have already made contact with human beings!

Right from the start, God has already talked to Adam and Eve, the first man and woman (Genesis 1:28). Not only that but the second Member of the God Family became a Human Being Himself as we read in John 1:14:

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Angels had direct contact with human beings in the past and even in the present. (Note: image may not be biblically accurate)

God has also sent angels to fulfill His purpose and in some cases, that involves directly talking to human beings. We read in Hebrews 13:2:

2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.

Undoubtedly, human beings have already been in contact with extraterrestrial lifeforms!

The Alien Returning to Earth

As we have read, the aliens mentioned in the Bible aren’t how popular media have portrayed them to be. They are spiritual beings who live outside of the physical realm. They don’t live on other planets as many supposed to think they would be.

Now, here’s what’s more astonishing. The Bible reveals that Yahshua (Jesus Christ) will one day return here on Earth to establish the Kingdom of God!

We read Zechariah 14:1,3-4:

1 Behold, the day of the LORD is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst…

3 Then the LORD will go forth
And fight against those nations,
As He fights in the day of battle.

4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.

Popular media like to depict aliens as powerful beings who are going to conquer the earth and enslave or kill people. Satan is behind this propaganda. Satan wants people to think that anything coming down from the sky will destroy the Earth. As a result, when human beings see Christ descending from heaven in the future, they will gather together and fight the returning King.

We read in Revelation 19:11,19-20:

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war…

19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.

As you can see, Satan is conditioning human beings to hate “aliens.” When Christ returns here on the earth, they will see Him as an alien conquering the world and thus, many will unite against Yahshua and will hopelessly try to defeat Him.

Aliens as an alternative to the truth

Some human beings who refuse to believe the revealed word of God written in the Bible might try to find meaning outside of our planet. They look for aliens as a way to find answers to what really is the meaning and purpose of life.

Physicist Paul Davies commented on people’s quest to find meaning by finding aliens. He said, “The belief in super-advanced aliens … can provide some measure of comfort and inspiration for people whose lives may otherwise appear to be boring and futile.”

Some people put their hope in aliens who will deliver us from self-destruction. They thought of aliens landing on Earth to put an end to human suffering, war, and poverty.

Don’t place your hope in aliens. Place your hope in God.

Sadly, these people are putting their hope in the wrong place. Yes, there will be an alien who will come down from the sky and deliver mankind from destruction. However, it won’t be the alien they thought it to be. It will be Yahshua the Messiah, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who will establish God’s perfect Kingdom here on earth!

Wrapping Up

The Bible is silent about life forms outside of the planet Earth. There is certainly no indication in the Bible that physical aliens live somewhere in outer space. If you’re looking for aliens, then you will just be disappointed. Aliens as conceptualized by popular media don’t exist.

However, there are extraterrestrial lifeforms that have been proven to have existed. These are the spiritual beings that include God the Father, His Son, and the angels. One day, God will send back His Son here on earth to establish His Kingdom. At that time, people will stop looking for aliens but will start looking to God.
