How to Increase Your Faith in 10 Powerful Steps

About 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah) asked a fascinating and perplexing question. We read in Luke 18:8,  “When the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

Why would our Savior ask such a weird question? After all, Christianity is one of the biggest religions today with more than 2.6 billion adherents. Surely, there should be a lot of faith to find on this earth, right?

Well, not exactly. The truth is that most people today are Christians by name. People who call themselves Christians are not exactly who they claim to be. Many so-called Christians only have a superficial understanding of the Bible and worse, they don’t apply the little spiritual knowledge that they have. As a result, only a few people are able to develop the right faith that God would be pleased with.

Looking outside of Christianity, we also see a poverty of faith. In fact, we are living in a faithless wasteland. In a cynical, suspicious, and skeptical world, we see so many people have lost their faith. They have lost their faith in their marriage, government, other people, and even in God.

How about you? How is your faith? Or should I ask, do you have faith? Will Jesus (Yahshua) find you faithful when He returns here on earth?

Thankfully, you can have a stronger, more steadfast, and reliable faith. How? That’s exactly what I want to talk about today.

In this post, let me share with you the 10 powerful steps to developing, increasing, and strengthening your faith!

How to Increase your Faith in 8 Easy Steps
How to Increase Your Faith in 10 Easy Steps

Step 1: Listen to the Word of God

The very first step you should take in strengthening your faith is to listen to the Word of God. The reason people don’t have faith in God is because they don’t know who God is in the first place. They don’t read His word where He reveals Himself!

We read in Romans 10:17:

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

How does faith? It comes from hearing. Hearing what? Hearing by the word of God.

Most Christians become followers of Christ by first hearing the Gospel preached to them. God calls people into His Church through His people who are also preaching His word.

This tells you that listening to the Gospel preached to you is an important part of growing your faith. When we start our Christian walk, it is crucial that we learn from other servants of God. We do this by listening to sermons, reading church literature, and discussing various biblical topics with other believers.

When we listen to the word of God, a seed is planted in our hearts. That’s the start of our walk with God and as we grow in the knowledge of God, that seed becomes a plant and eventually, grow into a mature tree.

As you can see, listening to the word of God preached to us is a crucial step in initially growing our faith.

Step 2: Study the Word of God

Now, God expects us to continually grow in faith. Listening to the word of God is crucial, but it is not enough. We need to take the next step, which involves a greater effort on our part. That’s studying the word of God.

We read in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

As you can see, the Bible allows us to be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work and that includes improving our faith.

There’s a difference between reading the Bible and studying the Bible. When we read, we simply look at the words written in the Bible. However, when we study, we become more intentional in understanding the word of God. We take out our notebooks and pen and bible study tools to help us better understand the Bible.

Studying the Bible is an important aspect of building our faith. The more we study the Bible, the more biblical knowledge and understanding we acquire. We gain a deeper appreciation of what our faith is and how to increase it.

Remember, you can only understand what faith is and how to grow it through the word of God. The more you spend time on God’s word, the more your faith grows and the more your faith grows, the more you’ll seek to spend time on God’s word.

The Bible reveals how we can increase our faith. So, how would you know how to increase your faith if you don’t study the Bible, right?

As you can see, studying God’s word is super crucial when it comes to building your faith.

Step no. 3: Memorize the Scripture

Psalms 119:11 tells us:

11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.

To further gain the benefits of listening and studying God’s word, we must memorize them. When we memorize Bible verses, we become more and more familiar with the word of God. We have a better way of recalling Bible verses and allowing them to transform our faith.

You can memorize God’s promises to increase your faith. Because we know that God’s word is true and faithful, we can put our full confidence in Him. As we memorize Bible verses, we become more aware of what God can do and what He can do for us.

For example, you can memorize 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says that God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear. When you memorize this verse, you can bring it to mind every time you go through life’s difficulties.

Memorizing God’s word is so useful in various situations that could challenge our faith in God. Never underestimate this step. Remember, when Satan tempted Christ, what did Christ do? He quoted the Scripture. He can only do that if He memorized what God says in His word. In the same manner, when temptations and difficulties come your way, you can always quote the Scripture and you can do that by memorizing God’s word.

Step 4: Humble yourself

An important element of a strong faith is humility. You can NEVER increase your faith when you are proud and boastful. God can’t help you grow in faith if you are full of yourself.

Notice how this point is illustrated in the story of the Centurion in Matthew 8:5-8:

5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”

7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

A centurion is a high-ranking officer in the Roman government. A man with this high status can easily be filled with pride and self-centeredness. Yet, we can see here the humility of the Roman commander. He approached Christ not for himself, but for his servant.

Because of the centurion’s humble attitude, Christ exclaimed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel” (Matthew 8:10)!

Thus, to have great faith, you need to have a humble faith. It takes great humility to surrender your life to God. It takes humility to let go of your will and let God’s will happen to you. It takes humility to forget about yourself and focus on God. It takes great humility to admit that we are wrong and let God correct us.

That’s why humility is essential when it comes to developing your faith. You can better improve your faith when you have a humble heart.

Step 5: Pray

Prayer plays a huge role in increasing our faith. In prayer, we ask for God’s help in increasing our faith. We must never commit the mistake of thinking that we can do it on our own. We can’t DIY our way to stronger faith.

Notice the response of the father who asked Christ to heal his son in Mark 9:23-24:

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

There’s nothing wrong with accepting our struggles with building our faith. The important thing is that we acknowledge the problem and ask God for help.

In this story, the father knew very well in his heart that he is having doubts. However, that didn’t make him give up. He didn’t simply let his faith waver. He prayed and ask Christ for help!

In the same way, we should and we must pray because it allows us to tap into the power of God. Take note of this: prayer helps us increase our faith and our faith can help us pray more fervently. There’s a symbiotic relationship between prayer and faith. The more you pray, the more you become faithful and the more you become faithful, the more you pray.

Prayer invites God in helping us grow our faith. We need to include in our prayer that God would help us to strengthen our faith in Him so that we become more believing and trusting in God. Thus, if you want to increase your faith, you need to pray.

Step 6: Believe and trust God

Faith starts out as a belief and trust in God. The more you believe and trust God, the more your faith will increase. Now, it is easier said than done. There are times when trusting God is easy especially when things are going according to your way. However, when times are tough, that’s when our faith starts to waver, and trusting God can be more difficult.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us about the relationship of faith and believing in God:

6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Our faith should be built on the belief that God is the rewarder of those who seek Him. This means that we believe in God’s promises. We believe the plans He has for us are good. We believe that He will help us to receive salvation and be part of His future Kingdom.

So, how can we trust God? Here are some important answers:

  1. Trust God by knowing who He is.
  2. Trust God by knowing His promises.
  3. Trust God by knowing God’s reliability.
  4. Trust God by knowing His love.
  5. Trust God by developing the eyes of faith.
  6. Trust God by reading the stories of faithful servants of God.
  7. Trust God by seeking His will in your life.

So, start trusting and believing God and you’ll surely increase your faith.

Step no. 7: Obey in Faith

Do you know what is the difference between a living faith and a dead faith? James (or Yacob) tells us the answer in James 2:26:

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

This tells us that we must not stop just believing, but we must also put into practice our faith. Our faith should not simply stay in our heads, but it must be evident in the way we live our lives.

We can talk about how big our faith is all day but that would amount to nothing if we don’t practice it. That’s why, it is super crucial that we obey God to increase our faith.

Reading and Studying the Bible, memorizing verses, and praying can only do so much. You need to go out there and apply what you learned. While it is true that we can’t earn our salvation through our works or obedience, it is equally true that we must prove our faith through our actions and obedience.

That’s why, how can you know that I’m faithful, that you’re faithful, or any person? You can know them by their actions. Yahshua Himself said, “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Galatians 5:22 tells us that part of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit is faithfulness. So, we can only bear fruit when we actually act on our faith.

Step 8: Fellowship with believers

There’s a reason why Yahshua or Jesus started His church, which is the congregation or assembly of believers. He didn’t build the church simply to serve as a social club. No, it has a lot of functions and one of them is to help the believers to build each other’s faith.

Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us:

24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Part of our Christian calling is to gather together with like-minded individuals — people who have the same faith as we have. Like an ember of fire that gets stronger when gathered together, God’s people become stronger when they are together.

You should attend church services to grow your faith. When you spend time with your spiritual brothers and sisters, you are actually learning from them. Faith is contagious. The more you spend time with faithful people, the more you become faithful as well. It works the other way around as well. You are not the only one who is benefiting, but through you, you are also helping others increase their faith.

Did you notice when someone stops attending church? Eventually, their faith weakens, and started to take a different direction in life. However, notice the people who are active in the church. They are the people who are most likely growing in faith.

So, spend more time with the brethren and you’ll have a stronger faith.

Step 9: Overcome and Endure

Once you have faith in God, don’t expect that it will not be tested. In fact, you should expect that it will be tested. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when. The testing of your faith will come.

We read in 1 Peter 1:6-8:

6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love.

The Apostle Peter is telling us it is necessary for our faith to be tested not because God wants us to fail but rather because He wants our faith to be genuine and true. He wants us to develop the kind of faith that Christ praise and honor.

If you think about it, the testing of our faith is for our good. Like muscles that can only be developed through exercise, we can only develop our faith by exercising it through difficulties in life.

Thus, we must overcome and endure so that we become more faithful. When trials come to test our faith, what should be our attitude? We read in James 1:2-4:

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

We must be joyful because we know that after the testing of our faith, we will become more faithful and patient. It helps us to spiritually grow and mature. We can only have stronger faith when our faith has been strengthened by adversity. Although it would be painful, uncomfortable, or even difficult, we can still be glad because once the testing is over, we will be more faithful.

Step 10: Continue in faith

Developing our faith isn’t a one-time event. It’s actually a life-long process. You can never come to a point where you can say, “I already have a strong faith. I can stop now.” No, that’s not how it works.

Notice Revelation 17:14:

14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

There are many people who have been called by God. However, not all of them have been chosen. Fewer people would even be faithful until the end.

Yes, it won’t be an easy path to take. Developing a living faith isn’t for the weak. You can’t develop faith in your comfort zone. However, the reward is great — even greater than what we can ever imagine. That’s why, we must continue and be steadfast in our faith. Satan may try to rob us of our faith, but that shouldn’t stop us. With the help of Yahweh, we can all overcome. Christ promised that He will be with us until the very end.

So, that when we reach the end of our lives and we meet our Savior, we will hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your lord.’ Matthew 25:21
