A lot of people look up at the sky and marvel at the majestic, mysterious, and mind-blowing beauty of the universe. However, for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, the universe proves God’s existence. Here’s a blog post that will help you better understand how the universe points to a Creator.
Is God Dead?
On April 8, 1966, it was the first time that Time Magazine only used letters with no photos on its cover. At that time, the cover was so controversial that its front page became a relic of man’s quest for finding God.
The cover—with the traditional, red border—was all black, with the words “Is God Dead?” in large, red text.
At that time, the rising influence of atheism was growing and more and more people were doubting the existence of God.
The prevalent belief was that the more that science progresses, the less evidence we find that proves God’s existence.
The quest for finding life outside of Earth
In the featured article of the April 1966 Time Magazine edition, Carl Sagan, the famous American Astronomer, confidently declared that there are only two conditions that should be met for life to exist.
The first is to have the right type of star and the second is to have a planet that is just at the right distance from that same star.
This belief has led people to believe that since these two conditions are easy to meet, then there should be millions if not billions of planets out there that can support life.
Thus, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has started.
However, after almost 40 years of searching, the silence of the universe is just too much to take for those who are hoping to find living organisms from outer space. The sign for extraterrestrial life is zero.
Why is it? Here’s why:
Since 1966, the requirements for life to exist are not just two, as Carl Sagan suggests. It is not just 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50.
Today, astronomers believe that there are more than 200 conditions needed to be perfectly met for life to exist.
This tells us that as we know more about our universe, the more it shows the astronomical impossibility of life existing.
Yet, here we are, breathing and pondering upon the meaning of life. Not only that, but life here on earth is not just a few, but abundant. Our planet is teeming with life and could support a huge amount of life.
This blog is inspired by the book, “Is Atheism Dead” by Eric Metaxas. I highly recommend you read the book for more eye-opening and awe-inspiring revelations of the universe.
Willing denial of God’s existence
We are seeing that science doesn’t prove God is dead, but rather, science is continuously pointing to the existence of God.
This earth was intelligently made with great design and the intention to sustain life.
In our Daily Bible Reading program, we read Romans 1:20-22:
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are CLEARLY seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools.
As we look at the majestic power and incredible beauty of the vast universe, there’s no other conclusion that we should derive. That conclusion is clear and simple for all people who are honest enough to admit it:
There’s God who made all these things.
As Paul said, the undeniable pieces of evidence are all around us. From the brightest stars and biggest galaxies to the smallest cells and biggest ecosystems, we can see God’s existence shouting at us. Thus, there’s no excuse for us to deny God. We can see all the proofs around us!
The problem is that people WILLINGLY ignore God. Paul said, “Although they knew God.” It means that people actually knew that God exists. Yet, “they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful.”
As a result, people became futile in their thoughts. They profess that they know everything but in reality, they are fools trying to disprove the irrefutable existence of God.
The size of the Earth
Since the 1966 Time Magazine publication, we have learned a lot of new things about our universe and especially our planet.
Take for example the size of the Earth. If the earth were any smaller in the slightest degree, our magnetic field would be weaker.
When this happens, the solar wind from the sun would turn Earth into Mars.
If the earth were any bigger in the slightest degree, we will have a stronger gravity that would trap methane, carbon dioxide, and water into the atmosphere, making the air we breathe would become denser and viscous. It would be so thick that we won’t be able to breathe and we will surely die.
The distance of the Earth from the Sun
Another example is our distance from the sun. If ever we are slightly closer to the sun, all our water would evaporate, leaving us dehydrated and dead. If ever we are slightly farther from the sun, all our water would be frozen, making life unsustainable.
Here’s a video of Eric Metaxas who succinctly explained how Science proves God’s existence. If you want to learn more, you can read his book, “Is Atheism Dead?“
How Jupiter and Saturn support life on Earth
Now, think about the largest planets in our solar system — Jupiter and Saturn. What do they have to do with life here on earth? Answer — a lot!
Because of the powerful gravitational pull of Jupiter and Saturn, a lot of asteroids and celestial speeding objects are pulled towards them. Without these titanic and gigantic planets, we would be like the bowling pins, waiting for asteroids to plow through us.
The location of the Earth in the Milky Way
The position of our solar system within our galaxy, the Milky Way, also plays a vital role in helping life to exist on Earth. Our solar system is located on the inner edge of the Orion Arm of our galaxy.
There are more stars at the center of the Milky Way. If we are closer to the center, we will be exposed to a greater level of radiation. If we are farther from the center, we will most likely not find a star like the sun because the stars at the edge of the Milky Way are too small.
How the moon helps in sustaining life on Earth
Now, I believe here’s the most interesting part of our discussion — the moon.
Have you ever asked yourself how the moon was formed? Where did it come from? How did it exist? A lot of hypotheses were put forward by scientists. It has baffled even the brightest minds in our modern age.
However, we know how it existed.
We read in Genesis 1:14-16:
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.
16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.
God created the moon to support life here on earth.
The gravitational pull of the moon helped in the stabilization of Earth’s rotation around its axis. This gravity helps in keeping our climate and seasons stable plus it regulates the oceans’ tides to support marine ecosystems.
The uniqueness of the Moon
Now, here are more interesting observations that you should know that strongly prove intelligent design.
Did you know that our moon is 27 percent the size of the Earth? Now, this might not be a big deal, but when you start observing other planets, you’ll see how the moon was specially made for the Earth.
The size of the moon is actually not the normal size of moons. In fact, it is far from normal.
Did you know that out of all the planets in our solar system, it is only the Earth that has one moon? Aside from that, our moon is way larger than other moons.
For example, Mercury and Venus have no moons at all. Mars has two moons but they are so tiny.
Just to give you a perspective, our moon is 2,000 miles in diameter. The moons of Mars are only fourteen miles and eight miles in diameter!
Jupiter has about 79 moons. The majority of them are so small that they might not even be counted as moons. The largest one is 3,000 miles in diameter, but it is still small compared to the massive size of Jupiter.
Saturn has 82 moons, Uranus has 27 moons, and Neptune has fourteen moons. Pluto, whether it is a planet or not, has no moons.
As you can see, the moon of the Earth is unique and one of a kind.
Intelligent design in total eclipses
However, that’s not where the “lucky accidents” stop.
I have no time to show you the calculation, but upon observation, you will see that the size of the sun and the moon seems to be the same from the perspective of someone standing on earth. Yet, we know that the sun is much bigger than the moon.
The precise position of the moon, sun, and Earth made total eclipses possible. Have you wondered, how is it that the moon can perfectly cover the sun when the moon is actually smaller?
Why is it that they match up as if they were made to do that?
As you can see, all these things should stop you on your track and wonder, are all these just mere coincidences?
Are we all just a product of random chance, a product of mindless accidents?
Our planet and the universe are just too wonderfully designed and terrifyingly astonishing at the same time for us not to consider the existence of a Divine Being.
Life is only possible if there’s a life giver
Brethren, there are a lot of things I can tell you, but I believe these should be a good start for us to really understand that life here on earth is mathematically impossible. That we ought not to exist, live, and breathe. There’s NOTHING in this universe alone that can produce life of itself.
Even if you give the universe billions or trillions of years, it will never produce life.
There are specific and delicate conditions that should be perfectly met all at once for life to exist.
Thus, life is only possible with Yahweh.
It is through His majestic power that you and I are here, reading this message, alive and breathing.
Yes, life on earth is impossible, that’s why it’s called a miracle — a supernatural phenomenon that points to the Almighty Creator.
The heavens declare the glory of God
I would like to end with this verse found in Psalms 19:1-4:
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
2 Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
Whether it is night or day, when we look at the heavens, we can see the majesty and reality of Yahweh. From the beauty of a sunset and sunrise to the glorious display of power in every star in the universe, the heavens declare God’s glory.
God is glorious in the magnanimity of his creation. God is glorious in His engineering power. God is glorious in His creative work. God is glorious in His love as we are sustained every day with His creation.
Day unto day, night unto night, without any break and fail, the heavens continually show God’s glory. Humans may stop worshiping God, but the heavens would not stop.
3 There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.
4 Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
Although human beings have hundreds of languages and dialects, they do understand the speech that comes from the heavens. The knowledge is readily available to those who have the heart to understand.
No matter where you are on earth, no matter what language you speak, no matter who you are, God’s glory is communicated throughout the heavens and thus, there is no escaping the fact that God does exist and He made all these things.
The universe proves God’s existence
It is my sincerest hope brethren that this message has strengthened your faith as it has strengthened my faith.
I hope that this message demonstrated to you that we are not a product of randomness and blind chance. We are purposely and lovingly created and because of that, we must live this life according to our Creator.
