7 Signs Technology Is Discipling Your Child More Than You Are

Today, I want to talk about the 7 undeniable signs technology is influencing your child more than you do. As always, stick to the very end and I’ll be offering a FREE Bible study guide to help you raise godly children in today’s digital age.

Who is shaping your child’s mind?

That’s a question every Christian parent needs to ask.

Because whether we realize it or not, our children are being discipled every day. The question is not if they are being discipled—but by whom.

For generations, parents, churches, and families played the biggest role in forming a child’s values and worldview. But today, smartphones, YouTube, TikTok, video games, and social media influencers are competing for that role.

And often, they’re winning.

Technology itself isn’t evil. It can be a wonderful tool. But tools become dangerous when they become teachers.

Here are seven signs that technology may be discipling your child more than you are.

1. They Spend More Time With Screens Than With Family

Discipleship requires time.

In Deuteronomy 6, God instructed parents to teach His commandments diligently to their children when sitting in the house, walking by the way, lying down, and rising up.

In other words, discipleship happens through everyday life.

But if screens occupy most of your child’s waking hours, who is spending the most time with them?

You cannot outsource spiritual formation to Sunday services while YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix occupy the rest of the week.

Whoever gets the most attention often gets the greatest influence.

2. They Know Internet Trends Better Than Biblical Truth

Many children can tell you the latest viral dance, meme, or gaming update.

But ask them about David and Goliath, the fruit of the Spirit, or what Jesus taught about forgiveness, and they struggle.

That should concern us.

There’s nothing wrong with knowing pop culture. But when entertainment knowledge vastly outweighs biblical knowledge, it reveals what is feeding the heart.

Whatever repeatedly enters the mind eventually shapes the soul.

3. Their Moods Depend on Screens

Have you noticed how some children become irritable, anxious, or angry when devices are taken away?

This may indicate more than simple disappointment.

It may reveal attachment.

When technology becomes a child’s primary source of comfort, happiness, or escape, it begins to occupy a place that belongs to God and healthy relationships.

Our children need to learn that peace, joy, and rest are not found in endless scrolling but ultimately in the Lord.

4. Influencers Have More Authority Than Parents

Children naturally admire people.

But when a YouTuber, celebrity, or social media personality carries more weight than Mom and Dad, something is out of balance.

Who are your children quoting?

Whose opinions do they trust?

Whose approval matters most?

The voices they admire today will shape the values they embrace tomorrow.

As parents, our goal isn’t merely to control our children. It is to lovingly guide their hearts and remain their most trusted source of wisdom.

5. Family Conversations Are Being Replaced by Screens

One of the quiet tragedies of our age is that families can sit together while everyone stares at separate devices.

Conversation builds connection.

Connection builds trust.

Trust opens the door for discipleship.

If every moment of silence is immediately filled by a screen, opportunities for meaningful discussions disappear.

Some of the most important lessons in life are taught around dinner tables, during car rides, and in ordinary moments.

Don’t underestimate the power of simply being present.

6. Their Identity Is Being Formed Online

Social media constantly sends messages about beauty, popularity, success, and self-worth.

Children and teenagers are especially vulnerable to these voices.

Soon they begin measuring themselves by likes, followers, appearance, and comparison.

But Scripture teaches something radically different.

Our identity is not based on popularity.

It is rooted in being created in God’s image and redeemed through Jesus Christ.

If the world defines your child’s identity, the world will also determine their values.

That is why parents must continually remind their children who they are in God’s eyes.

7. Spiritual Habits Are Nonexistent

No family is perfect.

But if Bible reading, prayer, worship, and conversations about God are almost absent from the home, something else will naturally fill the vacuum.

Discipleship doesn’t happen accidentally.

It requires intentionality.

You don’t need to become a Bible scholar overnight.

You don’t need to hold hour-long family devotions.

But small, consistent habits matter.

Praying together.

Reading Scripture together.

Talking about God’s faithfulness.

Sharing meals without phones.

These simple practices help create a spiritual atmosphere where faith can grow.

The Battle Is Not Against Technology—It’s for Your Child’s Heart

Technology is not the enemy.

But neither is it neutral.

Every video, every influencer, every song, every algorithm is teaching something.

Someone is discipling your child.

The question is whether that someone is the world—or you.

The good news is that it is never too late.

God has entrusted your children to you for a reason.

You do not have to be a perfect parent.

You simply need to be intentional.

Small changes made consistently over time can have an eternal impact.

After all, raising godly children isn’t about producing perfect kids.

It’s about faithfully pointing them to a perfect Savior.
