Today’s reading: Titus 2:6-8

A pattern of good works

We read in Titus 2:6-8:

6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

While this portion of Titus was written for men, there’s no doubt that it is applicable to all people, whether young or old, male or female.

The Greek word for “pattern” in this verse is tupos, which literally means a stamp. Stamps leave a mark that is the same as the pattern on their surface. This tells us that our good works should follow the same standard as what Yahshua our Messiah showed us.

Thus, we must always show a pattern of good works. You can’t simply decide to choose which day of the week or month you want to do a good work. You can’t simply say, “I’ll be a good person just this once and my job is done.”

A pattern implies consistency. It’s a conscious decision you need to make whenever the opportunity to do good comes up.

The Apostle Paul says, “In all things.” This means that doing good works should be a way of life. It’s the way we behave. It’s not a one-time event that we do, but we regularly perform good works as part of our Christian life.

As a result, when someone accuses us of doing wrong behavior, they would be ashamed because they don’t have any evil report to say against us. We should be above reproach. People may say all sorts of evil things against us, but we are at peace and we know we are not doing anything wrong.

As you may imagine, our lives shouldn’t be simply by words, but by actions. You can’t simply perform good works with well-wishes. You can’t simply believe and do nothing. Good works are a reflection of the commitment that we have made to God.

We need to ask ourselves then, “Is my life showing a pattern of good works?”
