Today’s reading: Titus 1:7-9

Qualification of a leader

We read in Titus 1:7-9:

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

Paul instructed Titus to find leaders who would help him in establishing the church in Crete. There are certain criteria and qualifications that Titus can use when choosing these leaders.

When reading through the qualifications, we can see here that Paul chose not the most gifted, intelligent, eloquent, or educated. Instead, Paul chose someone based on their character.

Having a theology or Ph.D. degree doesn’t qualify you for a leadership position. It’s not because of what you have or own. It’s not being able to communicate well with pompous and highfalutin words. It’s not your gift or talent.

What qualifies you is your character. Even if you are the most gifted, talented, and intelligent person and yet you have a corrupt character, you would not be qualified. This doesn’t mean that you should be perfect, because no one is perfect, but rather, God looks at the heart when He chooses people to lead His people.

Yes, your talents, knowledge, and wisdom will help you in leading others. However, let them not be the only or the primary basis. Godly character is still what we should look for. They are the true indicators of a godly man.

We can have the knowledge, but what do you do with that knowledge? The godly character will dictate how you will apply them in your life. What’s the use of your gift or knowledge if you don’t have the character to apply them?

Therefore, let’s focus on developing our character and make sure it is modeled according to God’s standards. In the end, it is your character that really counts.
