Godly contentment

We read in 1 Timothy 6:6:

6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.

A lot of people live their lives with the ultimate goal of getting rich. They spend so much of their time and energy pursuing material wealth. The problem with this is that they become so engrossed in making money that they forget what truly matters in this life.

Thus, the Apostle Paul reminded us that we gain more than anything else in this world when we develop godly contentment.

This world based your wealth on your assets. However, for God, the richest men are not found in Forbes’s top 10 richest people. They are not the top CEOs of multinational companies. They are not the people who have a big influence on politics.

In the eyes of God, the richest people are the ones who have laid treasures in heaven — the ones who are called upon His name and have followed His will for them.

Now, you don’t simply get content in your life. This doesn’t mean that you don’t work anymore and do not do your best in your work. That’s not the point of Paul.

Lest you misunderstand his statement, he added the word “godly” to “contentment” — godly contentment.

God isn’t against becoming rich. In fact, there are servants of God in the Bible that were considered wealthy. What God is against is when you put more importance on wealth than His purpose for you.

True contentment is coupled with godliness. This means that you do your best and let God take care of the rest. Godly contentment is being happy with the blessings that you have. You don’t get envious of what others have. You simply enjoy and celebrate whatever blessings come your way.

There’s no amount of money that can satisfy man’s greediness and worldly cravings. However, if you are content, you are actually richer than any other wealthy person. You don’t see the need to acquire more things because for you God is more than enough.

When you have the Almighty in your life, you have the greatest riches that no man can ever take away from you. And that my friend is how godly contentment can make you rich, blessed, and at peace.
