Today’s reading: 1 Timothy 5:8

Provide for your family

We read in 1 Timothy 5:8:

8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

The design of Yahweh is for the head of the family to become the provider. The man should work and ensure that his family is well-taken care of. While it is true that this is not always possible, God’s expectation is we aim to follow these standards.

Paul describes here what happens when a man stops providing for his own family when he is able. He said that that person has denied the faith.

We know how Yahshua instructs us to love one another and that loving others involves providing for them especially those who are in need and those who are in your household.

There’s a level of priority when it comes to taking care of others. We should take care of our family first. In our country, I often hear the saying, “Bayan muna,” which means “Country first.”

While it may sound noble and heroic, that should not be the motto of the church. We can’t serve the country while we neglect our families. We can’t feed others while our family starves. We can’t give our time to others while we don’t spend time within our household.

When we do that, no matter how good we are at preaching and doing the work of God, when we don’t provide for our family, we denied the faith that we preach.

Paul even adds, “worse than an unbeliever.” Being an unbeliever is already bad enough. However, Paul said that a person who doesn’t provide for his family is even WORSE than an unbeliever.

The unbelievers know their duty to their families and they do what they can to provide for them. How much more should a believer do the same?

God’s will for you a man is to find work and provide for your family. If anyone is out of work, we can all pray to God to help that person to find a job because that’s what God wants him to have.

I understand that our situations are unique. There are legitimate reasons why the head of the family can’t provide. However, God looks at the heart and He is more than willing to help those who do their part.
