Today’s reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Test all things

We read in 1 Thessalonians 5:21:

21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.

We are admonished to test all things and after doing that, we will hold fast to what is good based on what we have tested.

A simple instruction, yet difficult to apply.

So many people today have their own version of the truth. People claim that everyone’s truth is as good as anyone else. To make things worse, the truth is so difficult to find that a lot of people believe a lie.

The same is true in the world of religion. With thousands of religions today, all claiming to be the true ones, people can easily be deceived.

That’s why we are commanded to test all things. All people may claim they hold the truth, but the ultimate arbiter of the truth would be God’s word. If the “truth” people claim to be against what the Scripture says, then that’s false.

Now, here’s the tricky part: Satan is cunning and wise. He will not deceive us with an outright lie. He knew that it would be very obvious.

That’s why Satan mixes lies with the truth. He knew that even just a little drop of poison can already infect the whole meal. He knew that even a little leaven would infect the whole lump. He knew that a little sin can grow into a bigger sin.

In a world full of lies, we must test not just some things, but ALL things. When we are presented with so-called truths, they are not yet the truth unless we test them.

Once we have tested things, we discard the bad and hold fast to what is good.

Whatever things go against God’s word, then we remove them from our lives. We must constantly be vigilant and learn how to discern falsehood from the truth.
