Today’s reading: Colossians 3:1-3

Set your mind on things above

We read in Colossians 3:1-3:

1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

What we focus on, we magnify. When we focus on our problems, they become big. When we focus on the things that we don’t have, we see more things that we don’t have. When we focus on bitterness, anger, and disappointment, we become more bitter, angrier, and more disappointed.

That’s the reason we must be careful about what we set our minds to. Most often than not, what we focus on will direct our thoughts, words, and actions.

As followers of the Messiah, where should you set your mind? What should you focus on? What should occupy our minds?

Paul tells us:

“Set your mind on things above.”

When we set our mind on things above, we set our mind on the Father, His Son, and His Kingdom. Focusing our minds on them would give us a broader perspective on how we should live this life.

When we look at the world right now, we see a lot of suffering, discouragement, and chaos. Focusing our lives in this world would eventually wear us down both physically and spiritually.

However, when we look above, we gain the confidence that this world isn’t home yet. We are looking forward to the coming Kingdom of God. We are looking forward to the time when God will finally intervene and step into the affairs of men. Through His Son, God the Father will destroy the kingdoms of this world and replace them with His most holy and perfect Kingdom.

Therefore, set your mind on the things above. Focus your mind on it. When you do that, you’ll let God direct your thoughts and actions. You will renew your strength and faith. You will become a more effective servant of the Most High.
