Today’s reading: Ephesians 3:17

Rooted and grounded in love

We read in Ephesians 3:17:

17 … that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love

It’s difficult to go through the Bible without ever reading about love. God is love and since the Scripture is His word, then we would inevitably read about love and Ephesians 3:17 is just one of them.

There are two words mentioned here, “rooted” and “grounded.”

When Paul tells us that we must be rooted in love, it means that we should be deeply established in love for God and for one another. The root of a tree twists around rocks and holds up the soil. It goes deep down the earth so that it can’t be easily removed.

When we are rooted in love, we can’t easily be moved. We are fully established in God.

Aside from stability and strength, being rooted in love means that we get our nourishment from God’s love. We become healthier, stronger, and more powerful because God is providing all our needs.

The next word we need to look into is grounded. This could refer to how a building is grounded to the earth. As any builder knows, the foundation of a building is the most important part of the structure. Even if you have the most beautiful building, if its foundation is weak, it can easily topple down and get destroyed.

When we are grounded in love, we are laying our foundation in God. We gain great strength and stability because it is God’s love that directs our lives.

We must look into ourselves today and see where we lay our roots and foundation. We should ensure that our roots and foundation are not laid on bitterness, hatred, and envy. Those are weak foundations. If we lay our lives on these wrong foundations, we would soon see ourselves being destroyed when calamities and persecution come.

Therefore, choose to be rooted and grounded in God’s love. That’s the only strong and sure foundation we can all rely on.
