Today’s reading: 2 Corinthians 9:7

Cheerful giver

We read in 2 Corinthians 9:7:

7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

Sometimes, giving isn’t that easy. When the sacrifice is too much, we can feel hesitant to give and when we finally give, we aren’t happy about it.

You see, not all giving is pleasing to Yahweh. We can give a lot of things, but if we are stingy and sad about it, our giving could become in vain.

The Bible tells us that God loves a cheerful giver. God wants us to give out of a willing and happy heart. He doesn’t want us to give grudgingly or out of necessity. He doesn’t want us to give regretfully or reluctantly.

On the contrary, we should give purposefully. It means that you have the intent and willingness to give. There’s a purpose in your heart that you want to give to others.

You see, there’s something in giving that doesn’t only make other recipients happy, but also the giver. Giving is known to make people cheerful.

One of the reasons you should be happy when you give is because God used you to provide and meet other people’s needs. You are in a unique situation where you have the ability to give because you have something to give. That mere fact should already tell us that we are blessed beyond what we deserve.

Ultimately, we should realize that God is the most cheerful giver. It is in His character that He gives us joy in His heart. It is in His character that He gives because He loves us. It makes Him happy to see us also enjoy the blessings He gives and most importantly, share those blessings with others.

Since God is a cheerful giver, then we must also become a cheerful giver. The more you give, the more joy you will experience in your life.
