Train up a child

We read in Proverbs 22:6:

6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Children will physically grow up whether you like it or not. As time passes by, the child will increase in size and length. However, as parents, we are not only to watch them grow, but we have a huge responsibility.

We must train our children, which is not a one-time event. It’s a life-long process. You do it on a daily basis — day in, day out. Training a child involves hard work, but its fruit leads to tremendous blessings.

Our child training isn’t just any random drills. It should be done so that the child will grow in the way he should go. Most parents mistakenly think that they should be the ones who will decide where their child will go.

That’s definitely not the meaning of the original Hebrew expression. The way he should go refers to the child’s strengths, will, and desire. Every child is unique. You can’t simply put the child in a box simply because the same box perfectly fits another child.

You can’t decide for your child what he/she wants in life. You are just there to help your child to reach his/her fullest potential.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you let your child do whatever he/she wants. That’s not the whole point. Godly wisdom teaches us that we train up a child according to the ways of the Almighty. As long as the will and desire of the child are in line with godly principles and values, you can definitely support the child.

When you do this, the child will not depart from his/her chosen path even when he/she grows old. Since this is a child’s decision, he/she is likelier to stick with it. We can see that we have raised responsible and productive citizens in our society.

Ultimately, our main priority is to train our children on the way to eternal life. It should be our top priority. All other hopes and dreams should only be a tool to ultimately reach God’s kingdom.

We train a child while he/she is still young. We don’t wait until your child is old and it’s difficult to teach him/her again.

There’s a golden opportunity that all of us should take advantage of. May we not waste that moment and in Yahweh’s help, we raise godly children dedicated to God’s way of life.
