Today’s reading: Proverbs 15:16-17

What’s better than earthly treasures

We read in Proverbs 15:16-17:

16 Better is a little with the fear of the LORD,
Than great treasure with trouble.

17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is,
Than a fatted calf with hatred.

The little that we have becomes much when we fear Yahweh. The riches that we may accumulate would become nothing when we don’t fear Yahweh.

In this materialistic and consumeristic world, people are programmed to want more. The world is geared towards the way of getting rather than the way of giving. They tell us that you will never be happy without the latest products, the fanciest clothes, the most technologically advanced gadget.

However, all these things are nothing if you don’t fear God. The fear of Yahweh saves us from great troubles. The fear of Yahweh prevents us from destroying ourselves. Thus, even if you have great wealth, but if you don’t fear God, you will simply misuse that and eventually, it will bring trouble in your life.

Have you noticed that even if you have the most delicious food served on the table, but when the family is broken, the delicious food isn’t really that tasty? On the other hand, when the family is together and love is all around, even the simplest meal becomes extravagant!

Love makes things more sumptuous and delicious. However, hate can make things bitter and unpleasant.

Thus, it is always better to love than to hate. What we don’t have love will fill. What we have, hate will destroy.

In this life, let’s have the proper priority in life. We don’t put material wealth above God and family. We always make it a point that we give our time and energy in nourishing our relationships.

Yes, earning a living is important, but learning how to live according to God’s purpose is more important.
