Are you listening to Goliath?
The epic battle between David and Goliath is among the most popular stories in the Bible. It is a story of courage, inspiration, and most importantly, God’s divine intervention.
There are a lot of lessons we can draw from David’s encounter with Goliath. However, I just want to focus on one thing:
Goliath’s voice.
The battle is set on two mountains and one valley. It was like a stalemate for both armies. If one army goes down and attacks the other, they will be vulnerable and be easily killed by the other army.
So, what did they do? The Philistines wanted to settle the battle by sending out representatives or “champions.”
That’s where things get ugly. Every day, Goliath would hurl insults and threats. Because of Goliath’s size, no one dared to go against him, not even Saul who was reckoned to be the tallest in Israel.
This made the Israelites afraid. This made the soldiers lose morale. This made Saul discouraged.
We read in 1 Samuel 17:11:
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
What a sad reality for the nation that forgot about Yahweh. Sad, but true —- these people couldn’t see that the battle can easily be won if only they trust in God.
However, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Why?
Because they listened to the voice of Goliath.
Just like today, we could be listening to the voice not of Goliath, but of Satan.
Listening to Satan can cause us to doubt God, lose faith, and even sin against our Creator.
That’s why we must continually read our Bible and listen to the Word of God. The more you listen to God’s word, the more you’ll tune out the voice of Satan.
The more you study the Bible, the more you’ll recognize the great lies Satan whispers to our ears.
So, brethren, let’s not underestimate the power of reading our Bible. God’s help is available and it is ours if only we ask of it.
