📅 What happens when people abandon God – Daily Bible Reading

Today’s reading: Judges 21:25

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE ABANDON GOD?

The book of Judges concluded with this statement (Judges 21:25):

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes

If you ever wonder what happens when people start to forget about God and do whatever their heart desires, you can simply read the story of the Levite and his concubine in Judges 19-21.

We could see the crime of Gibeah’s men as so horrific and hideous that Judges 19:30 describes it this way:

30 And so it was that all who saw it said, “No such deed has been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up from the land of Egypt until this day. Consider it, confer, and speak up!”

We have read the dire consequences of forgetting God. We see how the men behaved like animals. They have let their unrestrained animal-like lust control them plus their human depravity was just abhorrent.

Consider what they did. First, they demanded the Levite to have sexual activity with them. These are not just one or two people, but there were many of them and they surrounded the house.

What was the response of the old man who owned the house? He offered his virgin daughter. To top it all up, the Levite allowed the old man to offer his concubine!

What happened next was just horrifying. They raped and abused the concubine all night until she was lifeless. The men even have the audacity to simply leave the woman in the front door of the old man.

The other tribes who heard about this hideous crime were so disgusted that they demanded for the men to be prosecuted.

What was the response of Benjamin’s tribe? They protected the evil men!

This means that a whole tribe even approved of their sickening sin and was even willing to go to war.

Today, we hear or see things that are worse than what the men of Gibeah did to the woman. We hear of men raping little children. We hear about hideous murder. We hear about sexual immorality to the highest level.

These are all the results of a world that abandoned God. This is a result of a world that had become more secular and would rather deny God’s existence.

We might already feel horrified at what we are seeing right now, but the truth is, things would get worse before it gets better.

This is the reason that we must constantly and earnestly pray, “Thy Kingdom come.”
