Today’s reading: Judges 11:35

Keep your word

We read in Judges 11:35:

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the LORD, and I cannot go back on it.”

Jephthah made a rash and foolish vow to God, but still, it is a vow that he needs to keep.

If there’s one thing we must learn from this story, it is this:

We must keep our word.

We read in Psalm 15:1, 4:

1 LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?… He who swears to his own hurt and does not change.

As you can see, keeping your word is a true mark of God’s people. If you want to be an ambassador for the Messiah, you must be credible. People should be able to rely on your words.

Not keeping your means you’re lying and thus, God will judge you for that.

Jephthah demonstrated his integrity by keeping his vow no matter how hard it was.

This should also teach us another lesson.

We read in Ecclesiastes 5:2:

Do not be rash with your mouth,
And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.

For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
Therefore let your words be few.

In short, it is better not to make vows and promises if you can’t keep them.

Let these words of Yahshua sink in (Matthew 12:36-37):

36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
