Today’s reading: Judges 9:6

Ungodly leader over ungodly men

We read in Judges 9:6:

6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem.

Abimelech, one of Gideon’s sons, became the first man who was crowned by the people as their king.

It’s quite interesting that sometimes, the leader of a nation reflects the spiritual character of the people.

From what we read in Judges 9, we see how cruel Abimelech was. To monopolize power, he killed all his brothers except for Jotham who escaped from his hands.

Now, Abimelech would have not become a leader if it wasn’t approved by the men of Shechem. Yes, it was Abimelech who did the murder, but it was the men of Shechem who approved of it.

So, we have here both an ungodly person leading an ungodly group of people.

However, we see that an arrangement like this would eventually lead to destruction and death. If you stay long enough with wicked people, sooner or later, you will surely suffer its consequences.

For three years, Abimelech seemed to win. He got his way. He rules in Shechem. He was having the time of his life.

That’s until God sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem. A rebellion against Abimelech ensued. While Abimelech was able to subdue the rebellion, he would later die.

A woman dropped a millstone over his head, mortally wounding Abimelech. This seemed to be a divine judgment upon Abimelech. It was on a stone that he killed 68 of his brothers. Now, a stone was used to kill him. It was on his head that the crown was put. Now, it was his head that was hit.

One important lesson we must learn here. Every evil action we take, God will eventually repay. Abimelech could have lived peaceably with his brothers, but no, he chose a path of cruelty and thus, he also died in cruelty.

As Christians today, we must aim to live peaceably with others. A path of pride, hate, and strife doesn’t end well.
