Today’s reading: Leviticus 19 and 20

A Call for Holiness

Leviticus 19 and 20 teaches us a lot of lessons and principles we must remember and apply in our lives. Both its physical and spiritual implications come with so much wisdom.

Just to give you a summary, the instructions we read in these two chapters include the following:

  • Keep the Sabbaths
  • Do not turn to idols
  • Be kind to the poor, strangers, and foreigners
  • You shall be honest
  • Don’t steal
  • Respect the deaf and blind
  • Do justice
  • Don’t bear false witness
  • Love others
  • Keep God’s statute
  • Stay sexually pure
  • Don’t practice divination
  • Honor your parents
  • And so much more…

These are great principles that if our society would follow, we would see a much better world.

However, behind all these commandments, God gave a reason. He said as an opening statement in Leviticus 19:1:

You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

He repeated this statement in Leviticus 20:26:

And you shall be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.

During the time of the Israelites, as they were settling in the land of Canaan, they were not just entering a new place, but also encountering other people of different cultures, religions, and backgrounds.

As a result, if they are not careful, they can easily mingle with the locals who don’t worship the True God. They can easily look at how other nations worship their gods and be snared with it.

Thus, Yahweh puts a GREAT emphasis on holiness. God wants them to be a separate group of people. They might be in Canaan, but that doesn’t mean that they should learn the ways of Canaan.

Because that’s what holiness is all about. It’s about being set apart. It’s being separate. It’s different.

And what we read in Leviticus 19 and 20 would enable the Israelites to be separate and not be like the people in Canaan.

In the same manner, we are also called to live a holy life. We are in the world but we are not OF the world. We are a different kind of people. We have to separate our lives from the ungodly lives of others.

It’s sad to say that so many “Christians” today are not really that different from the people of this world. For us who were given the truth, may we have a different approach.

Because we are called to live a holy life, we must strive to stay pure and unspotted from the ways of this world.
