14 Lessons Toward Passover: What does the Wine Symbolize? (Part 6)

The Passover is full of meaning and symbolisms that unlock our understanding to God’s plan of salvation. One of the analogies used by Christ during the Passover is the wine representing His blood. It is a custom for the Jews to drink wine during special or sacred occasions. However, Jesus gave a profound meaning to the drinking of wine during the Passover. Let us now learn why Jesus commanded His disciples to drink wine and learn its serious meaning.

The Passover wine as the blood of Christ

Matthew 26:27-28 tells us, “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink you all of it; For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Jesus Christ made it clear that the wine represents his blood. There are a lot of things we can learn from this analogy.

  1. Drinking a little wine during the Passover ceremony SHOULD deeply impress in our minds that the death of Jesus Christ made it possible for our sins to be forgiven.

“Indeed, according to the Law almost everything is purified by blood, and sins are forgiven only if blood is poured out” (Hebrews 9:22, GNB).

  1. Drinking wine helps us to remember the life and sacrifice of our Lord and Savior.

“In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ ” (I Corinthians 11:25).

  1. We are washed through the blood of Jesus Christ.

“And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood…” (Revelation 1:5).

  1. The blood of Christ does not just cover all sins but it also gets rid of our guilt. We need to be fully confident in God’s mercy and forgiveness of sin.

“For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, CLEANSE YOUR CONSCIENCE from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:13-15).

  1. Drinking the Passover wine signifies our willingness to enter into a covenant with God and Jesus Christ.

“Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the NEW COVENANT, which is shed for many for the remission of sins’” (Matthew 26:27-28).

Final words

We need to carefully consider the meaning of the Passover wine. Jesus shed His blood to cleanse us of our sins. His blood made it possible for us to be forgiven, remove our guilt, and give us the chance to enter into a covenant with God. We must realize that the small amount of wine that we drink during the Passover represents the very life and blood of the dying body of Christ.
