A lot of people are asking, “Will Islam overtake Christianity?” Well, if you’re thinking in terms of numbers, then it probably will based on the current data that we have. In this post, let us take a look at the 7 reasons Islam could overtake Christianity in the near future.
1. High Fertility Rates
The most powerful driving force for Islam to overtake Christianity is the high fertility rates of Islam’s followers. Yes, there are now about 2.2 billion Christians in the world. Islam’s population follows with about 1.97 billion. The Pew Research Center estimates that around 2060, Islam will overtake Christianity.
Pew Research Center further elaborates that while the world’s population is set to grow by 32% in the coming decades, Muslims are projected to increase by 70%—from 1.8 billion in 2015 to nearly 3 billion by 2060. Back in 2015, Muslims accounted for 24.1% of the global population. Fast forward 45 years, and they’re expected to surpass three-in-ten people worldwide, reaching 31.1%.
Consider this: Muslim women have an average of 2.9 children, significantly higher than Christians (2.6) and the global average (2.2). This demographic advantage contributes to a faster population growth rate among Muslims compared to other religious groups.
2. Youthful Population
Did you know that Muslims have the youngest median age (24 years in 2015), which is more than seven years younger than non-Muslims (32 years)? As these young Muslims reach reproductive age, their high fertility rates are expected to further bolster population growth.
3. Regional Population Shifts
Over a third of Muslims reside in high-growth regions like Africa and the Middle East, where populations are projected to increase significantly. Within these regions, Muslims tend to have higher fertility rates and younger populations compared to non-Muslims, contributing to their overall growth.
4. Projected Demographic Changes
Studies indicate that by 2060, Muslims could constitute over 31% of the global population, up from 24.1% in 2015. In countries like India and Nigeria, where Muslims coexist with other religious groups, their population growth rates outpace those of other communities, potentially leading to demographic shifts.
5. Cultural and Social Influences
Islam’s growth isn’t solely demographic but also influenced by cultural dynamics and global migration patterns. Increasing Muslim populations in Europe, for example, are reshaping demographics in traditionally Christian-majority countries, potentially altering future religious landscapes.
These factors underscore a significant demographic and cultural shift that could position Islam as the world’s largest religion in the coming decades, surpassing Christianity in global influence and presence.
6. Christianity is Mocked and Ridiculed
Christianity often faces mockery and ridicule in today’s cultural landscape. Unlike some other religions, which may respond differently to criticism, Christians typically respond with prayer rather than public outcry. In contrast, Islam is sometimes portrayed as a ‘religion of peace,’ yet a significant 8% of Muslims worldwide believe that suicide bombings are sometimes or often justified in the name of defending Islam—a statistic representing over 100 million people condoning extreme measures in response to perceived offenses.
This cultural bias against Christianity is reinforced by Hollywood’s frequent portrayal of Christians in a negative light, and by progressive movements pushing to minimize religion’s role in public life. From the removal of Christian teachings in schools to challenges faced by Christian leaders in sharing their faith, there’s a notable effort to marginalize Christianity, particularly in Western societies. These factors contribute to a perception of Christianity as a declining religion in some regions.
7. Christianity is a Persecuted Religion
Christianity faces widespread persecution around the globe. According to Open Doors USA, it is the most persecuted religion today. In 2024, the World Watch List revealed that 1 in 7 Christians worldwide endure persecution, with rates as high as 1 in 5 in Africa and 1 in 7 in Asia. Shockingly, the report documented 5,621 Christians killed for their faith in 2023, and reported 14,766 attacks on churches and Christian properties.
These stark realities understandably lead some Christians to prioritize peace and safety over openly practicing their faith. Additionally, many non-Christians, observing Christianity’s challenges, may choose to avoid involvement altogether
A World Dominated by Islam
Imagine a world where the rhythms of Ramadan echo more loudly than the chimes of Christmas, where minarets outnumber church spires in city skylines, and where the call to prayer resonates as deeply as the tolling of church bells. This is not a distant fantasy but a plausible future, painted by the compelling demographic trends and cultural currents shaping our times.

Now, we know how Islam works today. Radical Islamic countries continually try to subdue everyone under Sharia Law. Muslims in democratic countries call for tolerance and acceptance. However, Christians and non-muslims in most Islamic countries are not tolerated and accepted.
In European countries, we are seeing a shift in demographics. You don’t need to be a numbers guru to see the writing on the wall. In Europe, where the average fertility rate is a paltry 1.49—far below the replacement level—there’s a demographic earthquake brewing. Last year alone, Europe saw a population decline of 1.1 million. Meanwhile, European Muslims boast a fertility rate of 2.54. It’s clear which way the demographic winds are blowing.
Looking ahead, it’s projected that by 2085, thirteen European countries could have Muslim majorities. Imagine that—a continent once steeped in Christian history and tradition, now facing a cultural and religious transformation.
For many, Christianity has become little more than a checkbox on a census form, lacking the deep-rooted meaning it once held. In places like France, where 40% profess not to believe in God, and in England and Wales, where Christians now make up a minority at 46.2%, the spiritual landscape is shifting.
Across the Atlantic, in the United States, the trend continues. A third of Generation Z identifies as unaffiliated with any denomination. Christianity, once a cornerstone of American identity, has seen a steady decline—from 91% of the population in 1976 to 64% in 2022.
These shifts reflect broader societal changes, challenging traditional religious norms and prompting deeper reflections on cultural identity and belief systems.
What Does the Bible Say About Islam Overtaking Christianity?
We should not be surprised if one day Islam will overtake Christianity. Why? It is because, in the last days, people will abandon their faith. We read in 1 Timothy 4:1-2:
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.
Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah) also asked an important question in Luke 18:8:
When the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?
This reflects the type of people Christ will find during His return — faithless. Sad, but that’s the reality.
The Apostle Paul also describes the type of people who will rise in the last days. We read in 2 Timothy 3:1-5:
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
As you can see, more and more people will forget about God during the last days. Now, here’s the most shocking part: Christianity today is not what is really described in the Bible christianity today is mixed with biblical and pagan religion. In fact, if the Apostles were alive today, they would surely not recognize the Christianity we see in the world today.
The truth is that God is working with a small number of people today. He is preparing this special group of people to reign with His Son, Yahshua, during the Millennium where His Son and saints will teach the people of God’s way of life. I know this is a huge topic and thus, I highly recommend you request our FREE booklet, “Beyond the Grave” and read chapters 7 and 9 for more details.
Here’s the good news: whether Islam will overtake this world’s version of Christianity, it will never overtake the true Church of God! Christ Himself made this sure promise:
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18
Now, that’s an assurance no one can take a way. So, have faith. This world might be turning its back on God, but you and I have the choice to stay on God’s side. I hope that we all make that choice now.
A Call to Stay Faithful
Although this world is changing, we can always choose to stay faithful. Even if the world tries to eliminate Christianity, we must always do our best to keep on running the Christian race. So that once Yahshua returns here on the earth, we will surely be part of the Family of God.
